Muallim al-Tajwid (The Instructor of Tajwid) is a handbook on the rules of Quranic recitation (tajwid) and related Quranic sciences by Khalid al-Juraysi, published as the fourth installment in his Zad al-Mu'min ("Provision of the Believer") series.
Purpose and Structure
Al-Juraysi compiled the treatise as a simplified instructional guide intended to assist readers and memorizers of the Quran. The book is organized into eight chapters (abwab):
- Chapter One: Definition of the Quran, its virtues, and the honor of its people.
- Chapter Two: Explanation of tartil (proper recited performance with tajwid).
- Chapter Three: A simplified method for completing (khatm) the Quran in recitation and memorization.
- Chapter Four: Virtues of specific Quranic verses and chapters (surahs).
- Chapter Five: Rulings and instances of recitation prostrations (sajadat al-Quran).
- Chapter Six: A brief overview of the science of variant readings (qira'at), including major reading authorities and their transmitters.
- Chapter Seven: Selected unique benefits related to the Quran.
- Chapter Eight: Rulings regarding the veneration and handling of the physical codex (mushaf).
Method and Contents
The work employs a question-and-answer format to present rules concisely and directly. In addition to core phonetic subjects—such as the points of articulation (makharij) and attributes (sifat) of letters, elongation rules (mudud), and the types of recitation errors (lahn)—it addresses orthography (rasm al-mushaf) and the rules of pausing and resuming recitation (al-waqf wa-l-ibtida').
Reception and Reviews
The book received endorsements and introductory forewords from several scholars:
- Abdullah ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Jibreen wrote a foreword dated 29 Shawwal 1425 AH, commending the author's thoroughness and examination of classical literature on the Quranic sciences.
- The reciter Ahmad ibn Khalil ibn Shahin reviewed the work, praising its balance between conciseness and comprehensive coverage of practical rules.
- Dr. Abdullah ibn Ali Basfar, Secretary-General of the International Organization for Quran Memorization, reviewed the text and commended its modern pedagogic arrangement, particularly its treatment of articulation points, letter attributes, and pausing rules.
