Minhat al-Mun'im fi Sharh Sahih Muslim (The Benefactor's Grace in Explaining Sahih Muslim) is a four-volume Arabic commentary on Sahih Muslim authored by the Indian hadith scholar Safi al-Rahman al-Mubarakfuri (d. 1427 AH / 2006 CE) .

Background and Composition

The commentary was composed at the request of Abdul Malik Mujahid, the general manager of Darussalam Publishers in Riyadh, who sought a concise, accessible commentary on Sahih Muslim grounded in the methodology and understanding of the early generations (salaf) without partisan adherence to any specific legal school . Mubarakfuri completed the work over a period of approximately three years .

Methodology and Content

Mubarakfuri structured his commentary according to defined methodological principles outlined in his preface:

  • Conciseness and Focus: The commentary avoids unnecessary digression, focusing on what is required to understand each hadith clearly .
  • Legal and Doctrinal Derivations: It extracts legal and theological rulings from the texts, specifying the textual evidence for each deduction and indicating the preferred (rajih) position in disputed matters according to scriptural proofs .
  • Handling Variant Narrations: When Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj recorded multiple chains and wordings for a single tradition, Mubarakfuri explained the narration under its first occurrence, commenting on subsequent variants only if they contained unique additions, restrictions, or legal rulings .
  • Linguistic, Historical, and Biographical Context: The work clarifies rare vocabulary (gharib al-hadith), explains complex grammatical structures where ambiguity might arise, identifies notable biographical details of narrators in the text or isnad, explains military campaigns (maghazi and saraya), and clarifies geographic locations using updated information .
  • Chaptering and Structural Revisions: Mubarakfuri re-evaluated the chapter divisions and titles (tarajim al-abwab). He noted that while al-Nawawi's chapter headings are widely circulated, several reflect specific Shafi'i legal positions or impose qualifications not found in the hadith text; Mubarakfuri consequently adjusted and formulated new titles while retaining Nawawi's general arrangement where appropriate .

In compiling the commentary, Mubarakfuri drew upon classical hadith commentaries—relying extensively on Fath al-Bari by Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani—as well as works of biographical evaluation (rijal), history, geography, and lexicography .

Publication and Textual Layout

Minhat al-Mun'im was first published by Darussalam in Riyadh in 1420 AH / 1999 CE in four volumes .

For the text of Sahih Muslim, the publishing editorial team collated three major printed editions: the Indian edition printed at Asahh al-Matabi' in Delhi (1349 AH / 1930 CE; reprinted in Karachi, 1375 AH / 1956 CE) as the base text, the Istanbul edition from Matba'a 'Amirah (1334 AH), and the edition edited by Muhammad Fu'ad 'Abd al-Baqi .

The layout presents the hadith text at the top of each page and the commentary beneath it . It incorporates three numbering systems: 'Abd al-Baqi's chapter-level and overall hadith numbers, alongside a continuous serial number across all transmission routes and variants, including the 92 narrations in Muslim's introduction . The fourth volume concludes with comprehensive indices of hadith incipits (atraf) and narrator names .
