Minhat al-Bari bi Sharh Sahih al-Bukhari (منحة الباري بشرح صحيح البخاري), also known as Tuhfat al-Bari (تحفة الباري), is a commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari authored by the Shafi'i jurist and hadith scholar Zakariya al-Ansari (d. 926 AH / 1520 CE) .

Purpose and Methodology

In the preface of the book, Zakariya al-Ansari explains that his objective was to compose a commentary that resolves the difficult passages of the text, uncovers its obscure meanings, clarifies the grammatical analysis (i'rab) of its sentence structures, and provides sufficient analysis to spare students the need for other works, while incorporating newly formulated benefits (al-fawa'id al-mustajaddat) and refined principles (al-qawa'id al-muharrarat) .

al-Ghazzi noted that the work functions essentially as a condensation of ten earlier commentaries on Sahih al-Bukhari, yet it incorporates original observations and benefits unique to the author . The text is characterized by its concise phrasing, serving the needs of both intermediate and advanced students .

Reception

Scholars regarded the work as one of Zakariya al-Ansari's most significant compositions, with al-Hanafi describing it as being among his finest works . Muhammad al-Zuhri al-Ghamrawi commended the work for its succinct, lucid phrasing, fine analytical verifications, and accessible approach to resolving complex textual issues .

Publication History

The commentary was published in early print form in 1326 AH (1908 CE) at the Maymaniyya Press in Egypt on the margins of al-Qastallani's Irshad al-Sari, alongside al-Nawawi's commentary on Sahih Muslim . It was later edited by Sulayman ibn Duri' al-'Azimi in collaboration with Markaz al-Falah lil-Buhuth al-'Ilmiyya and published in ten volumes by Maktabat al-Rushd in Riyadh in 1426 AH / 2005 CE .
