Minhaj al-Tasis wa al-Taqdis fi Kashf Shubuhat Dawud ibn Jurjis (The Methodology of Foundation and Sanctification in Exposing the Doubts of Dawud ibn Jurjis) is a theological treatise by the Najdi scholar Abd al-Latif Al al-Shaykh (d. 1293 AH / 1876 CE; another source gives 1292 AH) . The work is a detailed refutation of Sulh al-Ikhwan by the Iraqi scholar Dawud ibn Sulayman ibn Jurjis al-Baghdadi .
Background and Purpose
The treatise was written in response to Sulh al-Ikhwan min Ahl al-Iman, in which Ibn Jurjis cited approximately fifty passages from the writings of Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn al-Qayyim, and others to argue that supplicating the righteous and seeking their help and intercession are permissible and recommended, and to argue that polytheism (shirk) cannot occur within the Muslim community . Abd al-Latif stated that news of Ibn Jurjis's polemics had reached Najd starting from 1254 AH, and after receiving a copy of Sulh al-Ikhwan, he initially hesitated to answer it due to its perceived weakness before deciding that an explicit refutation was necessary . The book aimed to demonstrate that Ibn Jurjis had distorted and misapplied the statements of Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn al-Qayyim to justify devotional practices directed toward the righteous .
Composition and Continuation
The author completed the primary portion of the book around 1280 AH, addressing most of the arguments raised in Sulh al-Ikhwan, but died before bringing it to full completion . The work received praise from contemporaries, including poetic acclaim from the Iraqi scholar Abd al-Qadir al-Baghdadi .
The remaining unaddressed sections of Sulh al-Ikhwan were later completed by the Iraqi scholar Mahmud Shukri al-Alusi (d. 1342 AH) in a complementary volume titled Fath al-Mannan fi al-Radd 'ala Sulh al-Ikhwan Tatimmat Minhaj al-Tasis .
Publication History
The book, alongside al-Alusi's continuation Fath al-Mannan, was published in Cairo in 1366 AH by Matba'at Ansar al-Sunnah al-Muhammadiyyah under the editorial supervision of Muhammad Hamid al-Fiqi, funded by Crown Prince Saud ibn Abd al-Aziz . It was subsequently published in Riyadh by Dar al-Hidayah (second edition, 1407 AH / 1987 CE) in a single volume comprising 396 pages .
