Min Hashiyat Ibrahim al-Saqqa ala Tafsir Abi al-Saud (Selections from Ibrahim al-Saqqa's Supercommentary on Abu al-Saud's Exegesis) is a portion of the extensive Quranic supercommentary authored by the Egyptian Shafi'i scholar and orator Ibrahim al-Saqqa (1212–1298 AH / 1798–1881 CE) on Irshad al-Aql al-Salim ila Mazaya al-Kitab al-Karim by Abu al-Saud al-Amadi .
Composition and Scope
Ibrahim al-Saqqa engaged in writing his gloss over the final decade of his life, but did not complete the entire commentary before his death . In al-Khitat al-Tawfiqiyya, Ali Mubarak noted that al-Saqqa's rough draft (musawwada) reached the end of Surat al-Qasas, while his fair copy (mubayyada) reached verse 9 of Surat al-Nahl: وَعَلَى اللَّهِ قَصْدُ السَّبِيلِ وَمِنْهَا جَائِرٌ .
However, the author's primary autograph fair copy preserved in six volumes at the Library of Al-Azhar (MS 1322 / 28469) extends through verse 51 of Surat al-Anbiya: وَلَقَدْ آتَيْنَا إِبْرَاهِيمَ رُشْدَهُ مِن قَبْلُ وَكُنَّا بِهِ عَالِمِينَ . A second manuscript copy at Al-Azhar (MS 1321 / 28468), consisting of marginal notes penned directly onto copies of Abu al-Saud's exegesis across four parts, continues up to verse 26 of Surat al-Ankabut: فَآمَنَ لَهُ لُوطٌ . Another manuscript copy is held in the library of Tetouan in Morocco . Abd al-Hayy al-Kattani described the supercommentary as one of al-Saqqa's most celebrated works, mentioning that his own father had attended readings of portions of it directly with the author at his residence .
Method and Sources
In his opening prologue, al-Saqqa described the work as an elegant exposition and refined drafting (taqrir latif wa-tahrir manīf) of Abu al-Saud's exegesis . The core text relies heavily on two landmark exegetical works and their commentaries: al-Kashshaf by al-Zamakhshari and Anwar al-Tanzil by al-Baydawi .
Al-Saqqa incorporated material from several earlier glosses, compiling divergent grammatical opinions and analyses in a comprehensive manner that gave the work the character of a grammatical encyclopedia . In addition to syntax, he treated rhetorical and legal issues raised by Abu al-Saud in detail, while systematically verifying and attributing prophetic hadiths, variant Quranic readings (qira'at), and poetic citations .
Modern Edition
The published portion cataloged under this title represents an academic study and critical edition of al-Saqqa's supercommentary covering verses 199 through 217 of Surat al-Baqarah, prepared as a master's thesis at Al-Azhar University by Jamilah Abd al-Salam Muhammad Abdullah (1437 AH / 2016 CE) .
