Min Hadith Ibn Hadhlam

Min Hadith Ibn Hadhlam (From the Hadith of Ibn Hadhlam), also known as Mashyakhat Ibn Hadhlam or Juz' min Hadith Ibn Hadhlam, is a specialized hadith tract (juz') preserving narrations transmitted by the Damascene jurist and judge Ahmad ibn Sulayman ibn Hadhlam (d. 347 AH / 958 CE) from his various teachers.

Author and Context

The author, Abu al-Hasan Ahmad ibn Sulayman ibn Ayyub ibn Dawud ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Hadhlam al-Asadi al-Dimashqi, was a prominent scholar of Damascus who served as a deputy judge in the city and maintained a teaching circle at the Umayyad Mosque dedicated to the jurisprudence of al-Awza'i. He held a weekly dictation session on Fridays at his home, where students gathered to write down his transmissions.

Content and Transmission

The tract comprises prophetic traditions related by Ibn Hadhlam from his teachers, who included Damascene and regional authorities such as Yazid ibn Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Samad, Ahmad ibn al-Mu'alla, Sa'd ibn Muhammad al-Bayruti, and Bakkar ibn Qutayba, frequently transmitting chains passing through al-Awza'i.

The transmission of the work was preserved through his student Abu Muhammad 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Uthman ibn al-Qasim ibn Abi Nasr al-Tamimi (known as Ibn Abi Nasr). From Ibn Abi Nasr, the text was transmitted by scholars such as Abu Muhammad 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn Ahmad al-Jubba'i, Abu al-Fadl al-Muslim ibn Ahmad al-Ka'ki, and Abu al-Qasim 'Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Abi al-'Ala'. Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani documented his own transmission chain for the text in Al-Mu'jam al-Mufahras, noting selected parts and their opening and closing narrations.

Manuscripts and Publication

Manuscript copies of the work are preserved in repositories including the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus (within composite manuscript Majmu' 101) and the Chester Beatty Library (MS 3495).

The work has been edited and published in modern scholarly editions:

  • Edited by Muhammad Ziyad 'Umar Tuklah under the title Min Hadith Ahmad ibn Sulayman ibn Hadhlam, published within the collection Jamharat al-Ajza' al-Hadithiyyah (Riyadh: Maktabat al-'Ubaykan, 1421 AH / 2001 CE).
