Min Alam al-Salaf

Min Alam al-Salaf (من أعلام السلف, "From the Notable Figures of the Predecessors") is a biographical work by the contemporary scholar Ahmad Farid, focusing on the lives, virtues, and spiritual qualities of prominent figures from the early generations of Islam.

Purpose and Scope

The work was composed to educate and cultivate members of the Islamic revival (sahwah) upon the exemplary character, morals, and conduct of classical scholars and imams. Through individual biographical entries, each profile highlights a scholar's asceticism (zuhd), scrupulous piety (wara‘), integrity, and perseverance in defending and upholding Islamic doctrine and practice.

Content and Method

The book draws upon classical biographical and historical sources to present detailed accounts of major figures from early Islamic history, such as the entry on Ahmad ibn Hanbal, which details his steadfastness in religious adherence and rejection of religious innovations. Alongside moral and spiritual narratives, the book incorporates traditional hadith scholarship, such as citing Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani's classification of Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari's teachers across five generational tiers (tabaqat).
