Min Ahadith Sufyan al-Thawri – Riwayat al-Sari ibn Yahya (Arabic: من أحاديث سفيان الثوري - رواية السري بن يحيى) is a specialized hadith collection (juzʾ) preserving narrations transmitted from the Kufan traditionist and jurist Sufyan al-Thawri (97–161 AH / 715–778 CE) . The collection is assembled and related through the transmission of the Kufan scholar Abu ʿUbaydah al-Sari ibn Yahya ibn al-Sari al-Tamimi (d. 274 AH / 887 CE), the nephew of Hannad ibn al-Sari .

Transmission and Structure

Because al-Sari ibn Yahya lived in the third century AH, he did not hear hadiths directly from Sufyan al-Thawri; rather, he preserved these narrations through intermediaries who were prominent direct students of Sufyan or through chains linked to them . The primary authorities through whom al-Sari transmits include:

  • Qabisah ibn 'Uqbah
  • Abu Nu'aym al-Fadl ibn Dukayn
  • Ya'la ibn 'Ubayd
  • His uncle Hannad ibn al-Sari (Abu al-Sari), who narrated from Waki' ibn al-Jarrah from Sufyan

The collection is organized by thematic sections grouping narrations according to Sufyan al-Thawri's direct teachers, including chapters devoted to Sufyan's narrations from:

  • Abu al-Zubayr al-Makki (Muhammad ibn Muslim)
  • Abdullah ibn 'Uthman ibn Khuthaym
  • Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn 'Aqil
  • Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i
  • Mansur ibn al-Mu'tamir

Contents

The compilation covers diverse legal, ritual, and ethical subjects grounded in prophetic traditions and companion reports (athar), including:

  • Ritual purity and prayer: Rulings on the description of ablution (wuduʾ), ritual bath (ghusl), the times of obligatory and voluntary daytime and night prayers, the call to prayer (adhan), the prayer formula (tashahhud), eclipse prayers (kusuf), prayer for rain (istisqaʾ), and wiping over leather socks .
  • Transactions and obligations: Hadiths concerning preemption (shufʿa), lifetime grants (ʿumra), the zakat threshold for silver and exempt items, and financial responsibility for dependants .
  • Pilgrimage and sacrifices: Reports detailing the sacrificial offering (hady) during the expedition of al-Hudaybiyyah and ritual sacrifices on Eid .
  • Supplications and ethics: Invocations before sleep and upon returning from travel, virtues of sending blessings on the Prophet ﷺ, prohibitions against disfiguring animals, and the condemnation of soothsaying and astrology .
