Mawsuat al-Akhlaq al-Islamiyya (Encyclopedia of Islamic Ethics) is a three-volume collaborative Arabic reference work on Islamic morals and ethical conduct, prepared by a team of researchers under the supervision of Sheikh Alawi ibn Abd al-Qadir al-Saqqaf and published digitally by Dorar.net (Al-Durar al-Saniyyah) in Rabi al-Awwal 1433 AH (2012 CE).

Scope and Structure

The work opens with extensive theoretical introductions examining the foundations of Islamic ethics, followed by detailed treatments of individual moral traits. The introductory section addresses:

  • The linguistic and technical definitions of morality (khuluq), as well as the definition and scope of the science of ethics (ilm al-akhlaq), which encompasses a Muslim's conduct toward God, oneself, other people, and the broader environment.
  • The importance and fruits of studying ethics, the objectives of adhering to moral principles, and their foundation in Islamic scriptural sources.
  • The categorization of ethics based on relationships, dividing moral obligations into those governing man's bond with the Creator and those governing relations with other humans.
  • The distinction between character traits (akhlaq) and innate human instincts (ghara'iz), noting that moral qualities are distinguished by being subject to praise or blame.
  • The methods of cultivating virtuous character, human receptivity to moral development, and the root causes of moral deviation.
  • Contemporary and philosophical issues, including a critique of moral relativism and the stance of adversaries toward Islamic ethical systems.
  • A critical evaluation identifying widely circulated baseless (la asla lahu) and fabricated (mawdu') hadiths concerning virtues and morality to caution readers against unauthentic traditions.
