Mawsuat Ahkam al-Tahara (Mawsūʿat Aḥkām al-Ṭahārah: Adillah wa-Masāʾil wa-Qawāʿid wa-Ḍawābiṭ) is a multi-volume legal reference work on ritual purity (ṭahārah) by the Saudi jurist Abu Umar Dubayyan ibn Muhammad al-Dubayyan (b. 1389 AH / 1969 CE) . Published in thirteen volumes, it is an exhaustive comparative study of purification rulings spanning both ritual and physical purity .
Structure and Scope
The encyclopedia is organized into two primary divisions:
- Purification from Ritual Impurity (Ṭahārat al-Ḥadath): This section addresses non-sensory, devotional purity concerning both minor and major ritual states . It spans five major topics: the rulings of water (Aḥkām al-Miyāh), ablution (al-Wuḍūʾ), wiping over barriers (al-Masḥ ʿalā al-Ḥāʾil), ritual bath (al-Ghusl), and dry ablution (al-Tayammum) .
- Purification from Physical Impurity (Ṭahārat al-Khabath): This section covers tangible impurities (al-Aʿyān al-Najisah) and the means of cleansing them . It includes treatises on relieving natural human necessities and bathroom etiquette (Ādāb al-Khalāʾ and al-Istinjāʾ), the instinctive practices (Sunan al-Fiṭrah), and natural bloods, comprising menstruation and postnatal bleeding (al-Ḥayḍ wa-al-Nifās) .
The material was developed hierarchically into constituent books, chapters, sections, sub-sections, and individual legal questions .
Methodology
The author adopted an academic comparative jurisprudence method aimed at presenting legal questions without adherence to taqlid (imitation) . In each issue, the juristic positions across the madhhabs are presented first in clear, concise language, documented directly from the primary reference works of each school .
Following the presentation of opinions, the evidence (adillah) and rationales are analyzed, with the author adopting conclusions based on the strength of the textual proof . A distinct element of the methodology is the critical examination of hadith narrations and the authenticity of traditions attributed to the Companions and early Successors .
Publication and Reception
The encyclopedia was published in Riyadh by Maktabat al-Rushd in thirteen volumes, with its second edition appearing in 1426 AH / 2005 CE followed by subsequent editions .
The work received commendation from various Saudi scholars, including Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymeen, Abdullah ibn Ghudayyan, and Abdullah ibn Jibreen . It was reviewed in al-Jazirah newspaper and profiled by Muhammad ibn Nasir al-Abudi in Mu'jam Usar Buraydah, who commended its exhaustive coverage, systematic analysis, and the author's dedication to primary evidence across Islamic jurisprudence .
