Matn al-Muwaththaq min Umdat al-Muwaffaq (The Verified Text from the Pillar of al-Muwaffaq) is a comprehensive didactic poem in Hanbali jurisprudence by the Mauritanian scholar Muhammad Salim ibn Muhammad Ali ibn Abd al-Wadud al-Hashimi al-Shinqiti (1929–2009 CE) .

Composition and Scope

The work is an extended rajaz poem (urjūzah) comprising 3,726 lines . In it, the author versified the classical legal primer Umdat al-Fiqh (The Pillar of Jurisprudence) by the Hanbali jurist Muwaffaq al-Din Ibn Qudamah (d. 620 AH), while incorporating supplementary rulings and explanations from Sharh al-Umdah . Ibn Abd al-Wadud composed the poem in response to a request from a student, identified in the poem's introduction as the student of his student, al-Hakami al-Madhhiji .

Method and Style

The poem is noted for the fluidity of its diction and its avoidance of artificiality, stylistic weakness, and superfluous filler, while remaining faithful to the phrasing of the underlying prose text . The composition demonstrates the author's skill in incorporating quotations from Quranic verses and hadiths .

In the opening verses, the author outlines several specific editorial choices:

  • Bypassing the original prose sermon (khuṭbah) of the source text .
  • Limiting himself to referencing transmitted supplications rather than versifying their exact wording, on the grounds that versification does not assist in memorizing them .
  • Avoiding the excessive citation of transmitted texts in the section on acts of worship (ʿibādāt) due to their widespread fame .
