Matn al-Akhdari fi al-Ibadat ala Madhhab al-Imam Malik (Arabic: متن الأخضري في العبادات على مذهب الإمام مالك, lit. 'Al-Akhdari's Primer on Acts of Worship According to the School of Imam Malik') is an elementary legal manual in Maliki jurisprudence by the Algerian scholar Abu Zayd Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad al-Akhdari (d. 983 AH / 1575 CE) . Written in concise prose not exceeding forty pages, the text covers essential individual duties pertaining to Islamic ritual purity and prayer .

Purpose and Content

The work was composed as an introductory manual to instruct students and lay Muslims in the fundamental legal obligations (fard 'ayn) required of every legally responsible believer (mukallaf) . Rather than beginning directly with technical legal categories, the text opens with a spiritual and ethical preface outlining the duty of rectifying one's faith, adhering to divine commandments and prohibitions, turning to repentance (tawbah) and its conditions, and guarding the tongue and eyes against unlawful speech and sights .

The legal body of the text focuses on ritual acts of worship (ibadat), structured around the core topics of:

  • Ritual purification (taharah): Detailing the obligatons (fara'id), sunnahs, recommended acts, and nullifiers of ablution (wudu), as well as the rules governing the ritual bath (ghusl), dry ablution (tayammum), and menstruation (hayd) .
  • Prayer (salah): Setting forth its preconditions (shurut), pillars, sunnahs, and merit-based acts .
  • Prostrations of forgetfulness (sujud al-sahw): Providing an extensive and systematic treatment of the rulings governing accidental additions, omissions, or doubts during prayer, specifying when prostrations are performed before (qabli) or after (ba'di) the final salutation .

Reception and Commentaries

Matn al-Akhdari became a widely studied foundational primer within the Maliki curriculum, particularly in North and West Africa, serving as an initial stepping stone before students advanced to intermediate and comprehensive works such as Ibn Ashir's al-Murshid al-Mu'in and Ibn Abi Zayd al-Qayrawani's al-Risalah .

Owing to its brevity and pedagogical utility, numerous scholars composed commentaries, glosses, and versifications on the text. Notable commentaries and pedagogical aids include:

  • Hadiyyat al-Muta'abbid al-Salik by Abd al-Sami' al-Azhari .
  • Sharh Matn al-Ibadat lil-Akhdari by Muhammad Bil'alim al-Zajlawi .
  • Su'al wa-Jawab 'ala Kitab al-Akhdari by Muhammad ibn Ali al-Fasawi .
  • Al-Zuhri fi 'Ibadat al-Akhdari by Muhammad al-Nabigha ibn Umar al-Ghalawi .

The text was also rendered into didactic verse; Muhammad ibn Abba versified its section on forgetfulness in prayer (sahw), and Muhammad Bay Bil'alim later completed a full versification of the manual titled al-Kawkab al-Zuhri li-Nazm Nathr al-Shaykh al-Akhdari .
