Mashyakhat Daniyal (The Mashyakhah of Daniyal) is a collection of hadith transmissions compiled from the audition records and teachers of the Shafi'i jurist and judge Daniyal ibn Mankali al-Karaki (617–696 AH / 1217–1296 CE) .
Compilation and Recensions
The work documents the auditory transmissions (sama'at) and narrations that Daniyal ibn Mankali acquired during his travels across major centers of learning, including Damascus, Baghdad, Cairo, Aleppo, and al-Karak . The mashyakhah was compiled and extracted (takhrij) from Daniyal's personal records by hadith scholars:
- Recension of al-Kanji: Extracted by Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Husayn ibn 'Abdak al-Kanji, who undertook the compilation upon Daniyal's request to document his narrations and authentic auditory certificates received from trustworthy masters .
- Recension of Ibn Bulban: Extracted by the hadith scholar 'Ala' al-Din Ali ibn Bulban (d. 684 AH / 1285 CE) under the title al-Ahadith al-'Awali min al-Musafahat wa-l-Muwafaqat wa-l-Abdal (Elevated Traditions from Handshakes, Correspondences, and Substitutes), comprising elevated narrations transmitted through forty of Daniyal's teachers .
Additionally, forty elevated hadiths (arba'un) were extracted separately from his audition records by Ibn Ja'wan .
Structure and Method
The collection is arranged under entries for individual shaykhs from whom Daniyal received transmissions, including teachers such as Abd Allah ibn Umar ibn al-Latti, Yusuf al-Sawi, Ibn al-Jummayzi, and Yusuf ibn Khalil . Each entry provides:
- The name and details of the teacher along with the specific setting or city of audition .
- The full chain of narration (isnad) tracing the report back to the Prophet ﷺ or the relevant authority .
- The textual narration (matn) .
- Technical comments regarding the status of the chain, noting whether the report corresponds (muwafaqah) with chains preserved in the canonical collections of al-Bukhari, Muslim, or others .
Reception and Transmission
The mashyakhah was actively studied and transmitted in Damascus and surrounding regions during the late 7th century AH . The recension compiled by Ibn Bulban was recited before Daniyal by Sharaf al-Din al-Fazari in Jumada al-Akhirah 680 AH, in sessions attended by prominent contemporary scholars including al-Mizzi and Ilm al-Din al-Birzali . Manuscript copies of the text have been preserved in historical collections, such as the al-Zahiriyya Library in Damascus .
