Mashyakhat al-Ni'al (The Mashyakhah of al-Ni'al) is a hadith compilation documenting the teachers and narrations of the Baghdadi Sufi scholar Sa'in al-Din Muhammad ibn al-Anjab al-Na'al (575–659 AH / 1179–1261 CE) .

Origin and Structure

The work was compiled and extracted (takhrij) by the hadith scholar Rashid al-Din Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Abd al-Azim al-Mundhiri (d. 643 AH), the son of the prominent traditionist Zaki al-Din al-Mundhiri . It gathers the narrations transmitted to Sa'in al-Din al-Na'al (whose death date is alternatively recorded as 674 AH / 1275 CE) from his various contemporary shaykhs via direct hearing and certification (ijaza) .

Transmission and Reception

The compilation circulated among later generations of hadith scholars and is cited across biographical and bibliographical indices. Its lines of transmission were maintained by transmitters such as Burhan al-Din al-Tanukhi (via Ahmad ibn Abi Bakr al-Urmawi al-Qarafi) , as well as through female traditionists such as Hajir bint al-Qudsi, who transmitted portions of it up to the sixteenth shaykh .

Manuscripts and Publications

A manuscript copy is preserved in the Köprülü Library (MS 1584/17, ff. 148–179), bearing an auditory certificate dated 880 AH . Mashyakhat al-Ni'al was edited by Naji Ma'ruf and Bashshar Awwad Ma'ruf and published in Baghdad by the Iraqi Academy Press (Matba'at al-Majma' al-Ilmi al-Iraqi) in 1395 AH / 1975 CE, followed by a second edition in 1993 CE .
