Mashyakhat Abi Hafs al-Maraghi is a hadith mashyakha compiled for the Syrian traditionist and muezzin Abu Hafs 'Umar ibn al-Hasan ibn Umayla al-Maraghi (d. 778 AH / 1376 CE) .

Compilation and Transmission

The collection was extracted and arranged (takhrij) for Abu Hafs al-Maraghi—whose full name is Siraj al-Din Abu Hafs 'Umar ibn al-Hasan ibn Mazyad ibn Umayla al-Maraghi al-Halabi al-Mizzi al-Dimashqi—by the Shafi'i scholar Sadr al-Din Sulayman ibn Yusuf al-Yasufi al-Maqdisi al-Dimashqi .

Al-Maraghi transmitted the work by direct audition (sama') at al-Mizza al-Fawqaniyya on the outskirts of Damascus in Jumada al-Ula and Jumada al-Akhirah of the year 775 AH . It was subsequently transmitted by his students, including the Shafi'i chief judge Jamal al-Din Abu Hamid Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Zuhayra al-Makhzumi al-Makki, who recited it at al-Madrasa al-Afdaliyya in Mecca in Jumada al-Akhirah 814 AH .

Structure and Content

The text lists al-Maraghi's teachers along with selected hadiths transmitted through their chains of authority . The first shaykh presented in the collection is Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Mas'ud ibn 'Abd Allah al-Huwayri al-Dimashqi, from whom al-Maraghi heard narrations alongside Abu 'Abd Allah Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Mu'min al-Suri in the year 686 AH . The narrations documented in the work encompass various legal and devotional topics, such as the prophetic report on sacrificial slaughter for newborns ('aqiqah) traced through Ibn 'Abbas .

Publication

The work was edited and annotated by 'Amir Hasan Sabri and published by Dar al-Basha'ir al-Islamiyyah in Beirut (2nd edition, 1426 AH / 2005 CE) as part of the Liqa' al-'Ashr al-Awakhir bi-al-Masjid al-Haram series (treatise no. 52) .
