Mashyakhat Abi al-Munja Ibn al-Latti (The Mashyakha of Abu al-Munja Ibn al-Latti) is a hadith compendium documenting the teachers and narrations of the Baghdadi traditionist Abu al-Munja Ibn al-Latti (545–635 AH / 1150–1238 CE), compiled and extracted (takhrij) by al-Hafiz Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Yusuf al-Birzali .
Overview and Compilation
The subject of the work, Abu al-Munja Abd Allah ibn Umar ibn Ali ibn Zayd Ibn al-Latti al-Baghdadi al-Harimi al-Tahiri al-Qazzaz, was a prominent and long-lived hadith transmitter (musnid) who taught in Baghdad, Damascus, Aleppo, and al-Karak . The extraction and ordering of his mashyakha was carried out by the traditionist al-Hafiz Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Yusuf ibn Muhammad al-Birzali al-Ishbili .
Structure and Transmission
The book is organized into traditional hadith parts (ajza'), recording Ibn al-Latti's teachers sequentially alongside representative hadiths and their transmission chains (isnad) . The collection numbers at least forty-three individual shaykhs across its parts, noting the dates of reception and biographical details for each entry where relevant .
The primary preserved transmission of the mashyakha runs through Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Abi Bakr ibn Yunus Ibn al-Khallal, who heard the work read directly to Ibn al-Latti in 634 AH . It was subsequently transcribed and audited from Ibn al-Khallal by Ahmad ibn Muzaffar ibn Abi Muhammad Ibn al-Nabulusi in Damascus on Friday, 17 Rabi' al-Akhir 692 AH .
Manuscript and Publication
A manuscript of the work is preserved in Dublin at the Chester Beatty Library (MS 5498) under the title Mashyakhat Abi al-Munja .
The work was edited by Amir Hasan Sabri and published in a single volume by Mu'assasat al-Rayyan (first edition, 1425 AH / 2004 CE) as part of a three-work compendium of hadith mashyakhas, alongside Mashyakhat Abi Hafs Umar ibn Muhammad al-Suhrawardi and al-Mashyakha al-Baghdadiyya of Ahmad ibn al-Mufarraj Ibn Maslama al-Umawi .
