Mashayakhat Ibn Imam al-Sakhrah (مشيخة ابن إمام الصخرة) is a fourteenth-century collection of hadith transmissions and teachers compiled for the Syrian traditionist and transmitter Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Bayani, known as Ibn Imam al-Sakhrah (686–766 AH / 1287–1365 CE) .
Compilation and Background
The work was extracted and compiled (takhrīj) by the hadith master Taqi al-Din Abu al-Ma'ali Ibn Rafi' al-Sallami (704–774 AH / 1305–1372 CE) to document the chains of transmission, authorizations, and direct auditions (samāʿ) of his senior contemporary Ibn Imam al-Sakhrah . Because Ibn Imam al-Sakhrah had lived a long life and held rare, elevated authorizations (ijāzāt) from major scholars in Baghdad—such as Ibn Waridah and Ibn al-Tabbal—and Damascus, his transmissions served as a vital link for the generation of hadith scholars in Cairo and Damascus .
Supplements and Related Works
The hadith master Zayn al-Din al-Iraqi (725–806 AH), who studied under al-Bayani and attended his readings, composed a supplement (dhayl) to Ibn Rafi's Mashyakhah . Al-Iraqi also began compiling a comprehensive catalog (fihrist) encompassing all of al-Bayani's auditions and authorizations, though al-Bayani died before its completion, and extracted selections of forty nine-link (tisāʿiyyāt) and twenty eight-link (thamāniyyāt) elevated narrations from his transmissions .
Transmission and Publication
The text circulated among subsequent generations of scholars through multiple lines of transmission . Abd al-Hayy al-Kattani recorded his chain of narration for the work through Shams al-Din Ibn Tulun al-Hanafi (d. 953 AH), via Yusuf ibn Hasan ibn Abd al-Hadi, Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Khaydari, and Abu Dharr Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad al-Zarkashi (d. 846 AH) .
The work was edited from manuscript by Muhammad ibn Nasir al-Ajami and published in a single volume by Dar al-Basha'ir al-Islamiyyah in Beirut in 1425 AH / 2004 CE as part of a series on texts studied at the Nuriyyah Hadith College in Damascus .
