Ma'rifat al-Sahaba (The Knowledge of the Companions) is a biographical dictionary and hadith compendium by the traditionist and historian Abu Nu'aym al-Isbahani (336–430 AH / 948–1038 CE), dedicated to documenting the Companions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and recording their transmissions .
Content and Method
The work is organized alphabetically according to the names of the Companions, though it does not strictly observe alphabetical order for the second letters or fathers' names . Approaching the subject from the standpoint of a traditionist (muhaddith), Abu Nu'aym provides full chains of transmission (asānīd) through his own narrations for the reports cited under each entry, enabling hadith critics to evaluate both chains and texts .
Abu Nu'aym stated that he restricted himself to citing one, two, or a few hadiths from among each Companion's total narrations rather than recording everything transmitted from them . He also deferred the biographical entries of figures for whom he did not possess an extant hadith narration, while frequently discussing hadith defects ('ilal) and textual variants across the entries .
Reception and Influence
Ma'rifat al-Sahaba became one of the fundamental references in the genre of Companion biography . Ibn Kathir criticized the work for focusing heavily on hadith narrations and their defects while neglecting to provide extended lineages, historical accounts, and biographical details, an assessment reflecting the perspective of a historian rather than that of a hadith specialist .
The book served as one of the four core pillars upon which Ibn al-Athir based his comprehensive work Usd al-Ghaba fi Ma'rifat al-Sahaba, alongside the treatises of Ibn Mandah, Abu Musa al-Madini, and Ibn Abd al-Barr's al-Isti'ab fi Ma'rifat al-Ashab . It was likewise among the primary classical authorities utilized by Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani in the preparation of al-Isaba fi Tamyiz al-Sahaba .

The work has been published in multiple modern editions:
- Edited by Muhammad Radi Uthman, published by Maktabat al-Dar in Medina (1408 AH) .
- Edited by Adil ibn Yusuf al-Azzazi, published by Dar al-Watan in Riyadh (1419 AH / 1998 CE) in seven volumes, comprising six volumes of text and one volume of indexes .
