Marah Labid li-Kashf Mana al-Quran al-Majid (The Resting Place of the Intelligent in Unveiling the Meaning of the Glorious Qur'an) is a comprehensive commentary on the Quran by the Javanese Shafi'i scholar Muhammad ibn 'Umar Nawawi al-Jawi (d. 1316 AH / 1898 CE) . The work is also known under the alternative title al-Tafsir al-Munir li-Ma'alim al-Tanzil al-Mufassir 'an Wujuh Mahasin al-Ta'wil .
Background and Sources
In his introduction, Nawawi al-Jawi explains that he undertook the compilation at the request of close companions after having hesitated for a long period out of caution regarding the prophetic warning: من قال في القرآن برأيه فأصاب فقد أخطأ ("Whoever speaks on the Qur'an by his personal opinion, even if correct, has erred") . He resolved to compose it to follow earlier authorities in recording knowledge for future generations, formulating its title to yield a chronogram corresponding to the date of its compilation .
Nawawi explicitly drew upon five principal classical commentaries:
- al-Futuhat al-Ilahiyyah by Sulayman al-Jamal
- Mafatih al-Ghayb by Fakhr al-Din al-Razi
- al-Siraj al-Munir by al-Khatib al-Shirbini
- Tanwir al-Miqbas
- Irshad al-Aql al-Salim by Abu al-Su'ud
Publication History
The commentary was published in Egypt in 1305 AH in two volumes, with al-Wahidi's concise commentary al-Wajiz printed in its margins . A third edition was issued in 1374 AH . Modern printings have also appeared in four volumes, such as the Beirut edition edited by Muhammad Amin al-Dinnawi .
