Manhaj al-Itidal (The Methodology of Moderation) is a contemporary doctrinal treatise on Islamic methodology and ideological balance authored by Adnan al-Arur . The work articulates what the author identifies as the moderate path of Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jama'ah on contentious questions surrounding contemporary Islamic revival, theological extremism, and principles of critique .
Composition and Purpose
The book was conceived in response to what al-Arur described as widespread factional discord, severe confusion within the Islamic revival, and polemical attacks targeting scholars and preachers . Aiming to establish general, comprehensive foundational rules (taʾṣīl ʿāmm wa-taqʿīd shāmil) rather than focusing on specific individuals, times, or places, al-Arur compiled and structured the material largely from his earlier lectures, books, and epistles .
Most chapters were drafted prior to the death of Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz and completed on the day Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani died; al-Arur noted that he had intended to submit the manuscript to both scholars for review before their deaths intervened, though he subsequently revised the work and added further chapters, dating its preface to 22 Jumada al-Akhirah 1420 AH .
Themes and Structure
The treatise examines major theological and methodological challenges confronting contemporary Muslims, defining moderation (al-iʿtidāl) as adhering strictly to the Sharīʿah without extremism (ghuluww) or laxity (tamyīʿ) . Its primary themes include:
- Creed and Reform: Outlining the Sunni framework regarding creed, methodology of societal change, and religious guidance .
- Takfir and Irjaʾ: Warning against the opposing extremes of radical takfīr (excommunication), which led to rebellion and violence, and extreme irjāʾ (theological deferral), which compromised core religious standards .
- Rulers, Society, and Jihad: Framing the relationship between Muslim subjects, governing authorities, and issues of confrontation and jihad .
- Rules of Evaluation and Criticism (al-Jarḥ wa-l-Taʿdīl): Critiquing the rigid, unconditional application of the maxim "disparagement takes precedence over praise" (al-jarḥ muqaddam ʿalā al-taʿdīl) when assessing upright scholars and callers . Citing Taj al-Din al-Subki, al-Arur argues that isolated disparagement driven by rivalry or bias should not override established righteousness and widespread scholarly commendation .
Reception and Review
The book was reviewed and commended by the Salafi scholar Muhammad 'Iyd al-Abbasi, who wrote a foreword dated 10 Rabi' al-Akhir 1420 AH / 23 July 1999 CE after reading the manuscript three times . Al-Abbasi stated that the work accurately represented the methodology taught by al-Albani and other senior scholars and served to clarify al-Arur's positions against detractors . The manuscript was also reviewed and advised upon by the preacher Ahmad Salam alongside other scholars .
