Manh al-Jalil Sharh Mukhtasar Khalil (Arabic: منح الجليل شرح مختصر خليل; "Gifts of the Majestic [God]: A Commentary on the Abridgment of Khalil") is a comprehensive multi-volume commentary on Maliki jurisprudence by the Egyptian scholar and mufti Muhammad ibn Ahmad Ulaysh (1217–1299 AH / 1802–1882 CE) . It provides an extensive textual and legal explanation of Mukhtasar Khalil, the foundational legal manual compiled by Khalil ibn Ishaq al-Jundi (d. 776 AH) .
Content and Method
The work serves as a detailed exposition of Mukhtasar Khalil, unpacking its concise phrasing, underlying linguistic derivations, grammatical parsing, and legal rulings . Ulaysh systematically examines Khalil's text, elaborating on the author's references to early authorities, legal transmissions, foundational texts such as al-Mudawwanah, and the divergent positions, qualifications, and preferred verdicts within the Maliki school .
Supercommentary
Ulaysh composed an accompanying supercommentary (hashiyah) on his own text titled Tashil Manh al-Jalil ("Facilitation of Manh al-Jalil") . This gloss was designed to resolve ambiguities, offer further clarification, and provide additional citations, and it has traditionally been printed alongside the primary commentary in its margins .
Publication and Printings
Manh al-Jalil was first published in Cairo at al-Matba'ah al-Kubra (Bulaq) in 1294 AH in four large volumes, with Tashil Manh al-Jalil printed in the margins . It was later reprinted in various editions, including a facsimile reproduction by Maktabat al-Najah in Tripoli, Libya, an edition by Dar Sadir in Beirut, and a nine-volume edition published by Dar al-Fikr in Beirut in 1404 AH (1984 CE) and reprinted in 1409 AH (1989 CE) .
