Manazil al-Huruf ("The Stations of the Particles") is an Arabic grammatical treatise on particle semantics (huruf al-ma'ani) by the Baghdadi grammarian and exegete Abu al-Hasan al-Rummani (296–384 AH / 908–994 CE) .

Subject and Scope

The treatise belongs to the early grammatical tradition dedicated to huruf al-ma'ani (particles of meaning), the class of relational words and functional morphemes that connect nouns, verbs, and clauses . In the work, al-Rummani examines the semantic functions, syntactic positions, and interpretive variations associated with Arabic particles . Khayr al-Din al-Zirikli observed that a short manuscript treatise ascribed to al-Rummani under the title Ma'ani al-Huruf ("The Meanings of the Particles") is likely identical to the work printed as Manazil al-Huruf .

Manuscripts and Publication

Manuscript witnesses of the work include a copy in Amasya (MS 1584/4, dated 765 AH) and another in the Iraq Museum (MS 778, copied in 1338 AH) .

The treatise was printed in Baghdad in 1375 AH / 1955 CE and again in 1968 CE . In 1388 AH / 1969 CE, Mustafa Jawad and Yusuf Ya'qub Maskuni edited the text in Baghdad within a collection titled Rasa'il fi al-Nahw wa-al-Lugha ("Treatises on Grammar and Language"), published alongside al-Rummani's Kitab al-Hudud and Ibn Faris's Tamam al-Fasih . It was subsequently published in Lahore in 1972 CE and in Amman in 1984 CE by Dar al-Fikr, edited by Ibrahim al-Samarra'i .
