Manaqib al-Nisa al-Sahabiyat (Arabic: مناقب النساء الصحابيات, lit. 'Virtues of the Female Companions') is a short hadith treatise compiled by the Hanbali scholar and hadith master Abd al-Ghani al-Maqdisi (541–600 AH / 1146–1203 CE), collecting traditional narrations on the valor and virtues of early Muslim women .

Content and Structure

The preserved text consists of traditional reports documented with their chains of transmission (isnad), dedicated to specific female companions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ :

  • Safiyya bint Abd al-Muttalib: The aunt of the Prophet ﷺ and mother of al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam . The text records narrations concerning her defense of the women gathered at the fortress of Fari' during the military campaigns, where she killed an enemy scout, as well as her resolve at the Battle of Uhud, where she brought shrouds for her slain brother Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib .
  • Umm Umara, Nusayba bint Ka'b: The compilation dedicates ten narrations to her military contributions and steadfastness . These include her direct combat defending the Prophet ﷺ alongside her husband and two sons at Uhud, where she sustained multiple wounds from Ibn Qami'a and other combatants, her rallying of the fighters at the Battle of Hunayn, and her participation in the Battle of al-Yamama against Musaylima after he had tortured and killed her son Habib ibn Zayd . The reports also record that her hand was severed at al-Yamama, Khalid ibn al-Walid's treatment of her injury with boiled oil, and Caliph Abu Bakr al-Siddiq visiting her in Medina to inquire about her health .

Method and Transmission

Al-Maqdisi transmits these accounts through his own scholarly chains of transmission . His proximate authorities include scholars such as Abu Tahir al-Silafi and Abu al-Fath Muhammad ibn Abd al-Baqi ibn Salman al-Baghdadi (known as Ibn al-Batti), tracing the reports through earlier historical and biographical compilers such as Muhammad ibn Sa'd and al-Waqidi .

Editions

The work was edited by Ibrahim Salih and published in a single volume alongside al-Maqdisi's Hadith al-Ifk by Dar al-Basha'ir in Damascus (1st edition, 1994 CE / 1414 AH) as part of the Nawadir al-Rasa'il series .
