Manahil al-Irfan fi Ulum al-Quran (The Springs of Knowledge Concerning the Sciences of the Quran) is a comprehensive manual on Quranic sciences by the Azhari scholar Muhammad Abd al-Azim al-Zarqani (d. 1367 AH / 1948 CE) .

Composition and Purpose

The work was authored primarily for students of the propagation and guidance (da'wa wa-irshad) track at al-Azhar University, in accordance with the curriculum prescribed by the Supreme Council of al-Azhar . Emerging in the 1360s AH (1940s CE), the book was designed to serve both as a structured textbook for preachers and as a modern exposition of Quranic disciplines . In the preface to its third edition, al-Zarqani noted that he revised, reorganized, and supplemented earlier drafts, though paper shortages during the Second World War affected the material quality of its early printing .

Scope and Structure

Drawing upon more than one hundred classical and contemporary sources across Quranic exegesis, legal theory, theology, and Arabic lexicography, al-Zarqani consolidated related subdisciplines into unified thematic treatises rather than splitting them into numerous isolated headings .

The book covers fundamental areas of Quranic study, including:

  • The historical evolution and definition of the Quranic sciences .
  • The revelation of the Quran and the wisdom behind its piecemeal descent (tanjim) .
  • The earliest and latest revealed passages and the occasions of revelation (asbab al-nuzul) .
  • Exegesis and the classifications of exegetes (al-tafsir wa-l-mufassirun), including valid and invalid hermeneutical approaches .
  • Legal rulings concerning the translation of the Quran .
  • Abrogation (al-nasikh wa-l-mansukh) and an enumeration of commonly debated abrogated verses .
  • The clear and ambiguous verses (al-muhkam wa-l-mutashabih) .
  • The literary style and the inimitability of the Quran (i'jaz al-Quran) along with its varied miraculous dimensions .

Method and Polemical Focus

The work is written in an elevated literary style . While incorporating substantial material from foundational works such as al-Zarkashi's al-Burhan fi Ulum al-Quran and al-Suyuti's al-Itqan fi Ulum al-Quran, al-Zarqani introduced additional chapters and maintained an independent critical approach . A distinguishing feature of his methodology is the systematic examination and refutation of polemical objections and doubts (shubuhat) raised against the Quran by orientalists and theological opponents, presenting the opposing arguments in full before rebutting them . The text also seeks to demonstrate the underlying wisdom of Islamic legislation and highlights congruence between Islamic teachings and modern scientific inquiries .

Reception and Editions

Manahil al-Irfan became one of the most widely circulated modern textbooks on the subject across Islamic academic institutions . Later scholars have noted that while it serves as an accessible and comprehensive reference, certain discussions lack rigorous verification (tamhis) . Commentators have also observed that its creedal stances follow the Ash'ari school, and specific points have been subject to subsequent academic evaluations .

The work has been published in two volumes, including an early undated edition by Isa al-Babi al-Halabi in Cairo, and a critical edition evaluated by Khalid ibn Uthman al-Sabt published by Dar Ibn Affan in Khobar in 1418 AH .
