Manahij al-Mufassirin (Methodologies of the Quranic Commentators) is a work on Quranic exegesis (tafsir) and the analytical study of exegetical methods by the Egyptian Azhari scholar Muni Abd al-Halim Mahmud (d. 1430 AH / 2009 CE) .
Background and Composition
Muni Abd al-Halim Mahmud prepared the work while serving as a lecturer in tafsir and Quranic sciences at the Faculty of Usul al-Din at Al-Azhar University . In his introduction, the author notes that the Grand Imam of al-Azhar, Dr. Abd al-Halim Mahmud, contributed specific chapters to the book covering the lives and exegetical contributions of four notable figures: Sufyan al-Thawri, Abu al-Qasim al-Qushayri, Abu al-Hasan al-Shadhili, and Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi .
Scope and Method
The book examines how Muslim scholars engaged with the text of the Quran and the diverse sources from which they derived their methodologies . Mahmud outlines the primary foundations of exegesis, starting with traditional transmission from the Prophet ﷺ (al-tafsir bi-l-ma'thur), and the development of reason-based exegesis (al-tafsir bi-l-ra'y) grounded in contemplation and the auxiliary disciplines of Arabic grammar, morphology, and rhetoric .
The work categorizes the varying orientations of commentators according to their primary intellectual interests:
- Doctrinal and theological inclinations (al-naz'a al-fikriyya al-aqa'idiyya) .
- Jurisprudential and legal orientations (al-naz'a al-fiqhiyya al-shar'iyya) .
- Narratives, moral exhortation, and Sufism (al-tasawwuf wa-l-mawa'iz) .
- Modern approaches concerning scientific facts and reflections in the contemporary era, with cautions against overinterpretation .
The author surveys both concise and extensive exegetical works, analyzing representative classical texts such as Al-Kashshaf by al-Zamakhshari alongside early transmitted and Sufi commentaries .
Publication History
The first edition of the book was published in 1978 CE (1398 AH) jointly by Dar al-Kitab al-Misri in Cairo and Dar al-Kitab al-Lubnani in Beirut . It was reissued by the same publishers in 2000 CE (1421 AH), and a second edition was published in Cairo by Maktabat al-Iman in 2003 CE .
