Man Wafaqa Ismuhu Isma Abihi (Those Whose Name Matches Their Father's Name) is a specialized hadith nomenclature treatise by the hadith scholar Abu al-Fath al-Azdi (d. 374 AH / 984 CE) that compiles narrators sharing the exact same personal name as their fathers .
Purpose and Scope
In the classification of hadith transmitters ('ilm al-rijal), scholars dedicated specific works to identifying narrators whose name matched their father's name in order to prevent ambiguity and eliminate errors in chains of transmission (isnad) . Al-Azdi compiled the work to record all narrators known to him among the Companions, the Successors (tabi'un), and subsequent generations of hadith transmitters who shared their father's name .
Structure and Contents
The extant text contains 97 numbered biographical entries :
- The opening entry is the Companion al-Hajjaj ibn al-Hajjaj al-Aslami, for whom al-Azdi cites a complete chain of transmission for a prophetic tradition concerning fosterage .
- The work concludes with the entry of Hujr ibn Hujr .
Entries typically present the narrator's name, lineage, and generation, frequently supplemented by hadith narrations transmitted through them with al-Azdi's own chains of transmission through teachers such as Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili, Abd Allah ibn Abi Dawud, and Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari . Among the figures profiled are Adi ibn Adi al-Kindi, Hind ibn Hind ibn Abi Halah, Hashim ibn Hashim ibn Utbah, Abbad ibn Abbad al-Muhallabi, Salih ibn Salih ibn Hayy, and al-Hasan ibn al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib .
Reception and Publication
The work is referenced in classical literature on hadith terminology, such as Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti's Tadrib al-Rawi, as a representative source for the genre of matching names in transmitter criticism .
The treatise was edited by Basim Faysal Ahmad al-Jawabirah and published in 1408 AH / 1988 CE by Markaz al-Makhtutat wa-al-Turath in Kuwait . It was issued in a single volume alongside al-Azdi's complementary treatise, Man Wafaqa Ismuhu Kunyata Abih, and Ala' al-Din Mughaltay's abridgment of a related work by al-Khatib al-Baghdadi .
