Man Rawa an al-Nabi min al-Sahaba fi al-Kabair (Those Companions Who Narrated from the Prophet Regarding Major Sins) is a specialized hadith monograph (juz') compiled by the hadith master Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Harun al-Bardiji (d. 301 AH / 914 CE), documenting prophetic traditions on major sins (al-kaba'ir) and their Companion transmitters.

Title and Authorship

The work appears on its surviving manuscript under the full title Juz' fihi man rawa 'an al-Nabi sallallahu 'alayhi wa-sallam min al-sahaba fi al-kaba'ir, while in some appended audition certificates (sama'at) it is referred to as Ma ruwiya fi al-kaba'ir or Kitab al-Kaba'ir.

Although classical bibliographies do not widely record the work by title, its attribution to al-Bardiji is authenticated through several internal and historical indicators:

  • An unbroken chain of transmission (isnad) attached to the text leading back to al-Bardiji.
  • Multiple audition records preserved on the manuscript, featuring prominent later scholars such as Diya' al-Din al-Maqdisi and Ibn Abd al-Hadi.
  • The direct authorities cited at the beginning of each narration are established teachers of al-Bardiji.
  • Transmissions found through al-Bardiji in other hadith compendia match the chains recorded in the treatise, and later scholars—notably Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani—utilized narrations sourced from it.

Structure and Scope

Al-Bardiji states at the beginning of the treatise that eleven Companions narrated hadiths from the Prophet ﷺ regarding major sins, noting that this topic falls under prophetic Quranic exegesis (tafsir). The text arranges the narrations under the names of the individual Companion transmitters.

The first Companion listed is Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, through an isnad via al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Affan from Abdullah ibn Numayr, from al-A'mash, from Abu Wa'il, from 'Amr ibn Shurahbil, who related that when the Prophet ﷺ was asked about the major sins, he responded: أن تشرك بالله وهو خلقك، وأن تقتل ولدك خشية أن يأكل معك، وأن تزني بحليلة جارك ("That you associate a partner with Allah when He created you, that you kill your child out of fear that he will eat with you, and that you commit adultery with the wife of your neighbor").

Transmission and Modern Edition

The extant line of transmission recorded at the head of the manuscript includes the transmission of al-Bardiji through Abu Ali Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Sawwaf (and Abu Ali Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Abd Allah al-Hafiz), through Abu Nu'aym al-Isfahani, through Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Haddad, down to Abu al-Qasim Abd al-Wahid ibn al-Qasim ibn al-Fadl al-Thaqafi.

The treatise was edited by Muhammad ibn Turki al-Turki and published in the Journal of the Islamic University of Madinah (Issue 116, 1423 AH / 2002 CE).
