Man Ismuhu Shu'bah (Arabic: ذكر من اسمه شعبة / من اسمه شعبة) is a biographical tract by the hadith master and historian Abu Nu'aym al-Asbahani (336–430 AH / 948–1038 CE) dedicated to compiling and distinguishing hadith transmitters and individuals named Shu'bah .

Subject and Scope

The work belongs to the genre of onomastic and biographical literature (rijāl) focused on single names (man ismuhu...), designed to differentiate prominent scholars bearing the same first name from lesser-known figures or homonyms to avoid misattributions in chains of transmission (asānīd) . While the name is most famously associated with the pivotal Basran traditionist and critic Shu'bah ibn al-Hajjaj (d. 160 AH), biographical records also differentiate other narrators sharing the name, including early traditionists such as Shu'bah ibn Dinar and the regional narrator Shu'bah ibn Zafir al-Asbahani .

Publication

The tract has been published under the title Dhikr Man Ismuhu Shu'bah, edited by Tariq Muhammad Lasku' al-'Amawi and issued by Maktabat al-Ghuraba' al-Athariyyah in Medina (1418 AH / 1997 CE) .
