Man Aash Miat wa Ishrin Sanah min al-Sahaba (Those Among the Companions Who Lived One Hundred and Twenty Years) is a biographical treatise by the Hadith scholar Abu Zakariyya Yahya ibn Abd al-Wahhab ibn Mandah (434–511 AH / 1043–1118 CE), devoted to identifying and documenting the Companions of the Prophet Muhammad who reached the age of 120.
Content and Scope
The work belongs to the genre of centenarian biographies (al-mu‘ammarun) within Hadith sciences. In it, Ibn Mandah compiles individuals among the Companions who lived for 120 years, distinguishing between different categories of longevity:
- Equal Division Between Jahiliyya and Islam: Companions whose lives spanned sixty years prior to Islam and sixty years during the Islamic era, such as Hakim ibn Hizam, Hassan ibn Thabit, and Huwaytib ibn Abd al-Uzza.
- Other Centenarians: Companions who reached the age of 120 but whose lifespan was not confirmed to be split equally between the pre-Islamic and Islamic periods due to early or late dates of death, or because their exact dates of death were unrecorded. Among those included under this classification are:
- Makhrama ibn Nawfal (d. 54 AH).
- Asim ibn Adi al-Ajlani (d. 45 AH).
- Al-Muntaji‘, grandfather of Najiya.
- Nafi‘ Abu Sulayman al-Abdi.
- Al-Lajlaj al-Amiri (also referred to as al-Ghatafani), who embraced Islam at the age of fifty and lived to 120.
- Sa‘d ibn Junada al-Awfi, the father of Atiyya al-Awfi (whom the author's grandfather, Abu Abd Allah Ibn Mandah, had listed among the Companions without specifying his age).
Reception and Scholarly Critique
Later Hadith scholars and biographical commentators frequently cited Ibn Mandah's treatise in their discussions of long-lived Companions, including Zayn al-Din al-Iraqi in his commentary on his Alfiyya, Shams al-Din al-Sakhawi in Fath al-Mughith, Ibn al-Mulaqqin in Al-Muqni', and Burhan al-Din al-Abnasi.
Scholars also noted omissions in Ibn Mandah's compilation, identifying several Companions who reportedly reached 120 years of age but were not mentioned in the monograph. These include Adi ibn Hatim al-Ta'i (d. 68 AH; other accounts give 66 or 67 AH), Al-Nabigha al-Ja'di, Labid ibn Rabi'a, Aws ibn Maghra' al-Sa'di, and Nawfal ibn Mu'awiya.
Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti summarized and abridged Ibn Mandah's work in his treatise titled Rih al-Nasrin fi man 'Asha min al-Sahaba Miat wa 'Ishrin, in which he condensed Ibn Mandah's text and supplemented it with those whom Ibn Mandah had omitted, as well as centenarians from among the Successors such as Abu Amr al-Shaybani and Zirr ibn Hubaysh.
