Makanat al-Imam Abi Hanifa fi al-Hadith (The Standing of Imam Abu Hanifa in Hadith) is a specialized treatise on Hadith scholarship authored by the Pakistani scholar Muhammad Abd al-Rashid al-Numani (d. 1420 AH / 1999 CE) . The work is dedicated to examining and defending the rank, reliability, and proficiency of Imam Abu Hanifa in the field of Hadith transmission and criticism .
Background and Purpose
While earlier scholars across various legal schools—such as Ibn Abd al-Barr, al-Dhahabi, Ibn al-Mibrad, and al-Suyuti—authored broader biographical treatises detailing the virtues (manaqib) of Abu Hanifa, al-Numani aimed to provide a work focused exclusively on Abu Hanifa's standing in Hadith sciences .
The author wrote the treatise in Karachi to address critics who relied on disparaging reports in biographical dictionaries (kutub al-jarh wa-l-ta'dil) to question Abu Hanifa's retention, precision, and mastery of Hadith . Al-Numani sought to demonstrate that such criticisms were defective or rejected by major Hadith authorities, and to compile classical testimonies affirming Abu Hanifa’s authority in the transmission of prophetic traditions .
Structure and Content
The treatise is organized into thematic discussions that analyze reports and scholarly evaluations concerning Abu Hanifa's Hadith scholarship:
- Pursuit and Mastery of Hadith: The work details Abu Hanifa's travels and diligence in gathering traditions from early authorities, citing classical evaluations such as al-Dhahabi's notes on his extensive study of Hadith beginning around the year 100 AH and his reception among prominent teachers like Ata ibn Abi Rabah .
- Inclusion Among Hadith Masters: It reviews Abu Hanifa’s inclusion in historical biographical works of Hadith masters (tabaqat al-huffaz), including al-Dhahabi's Tadhkirat al-Huffaz and Ibn Abd al-Hadi's al-Mukhtasar fi Tabaqat Ulama al-Hadith .
- Transmissions and Chains of Narration: It examines Abu Hanifa's narrations in relation to the most authentic chains (asahh al-asanid), addressing discussions by scholars such as Mughultay, Siraj al-Din al-Bulqini, and al-Iraqi regarding his narrations through figures like Malik ibn Anas .
Publication History
The treatise was first published in Pakistan in 1409 AH in the journal Majallat al-Dirasat al-Islamiyyah, issued by the International Islamic University in Islamabad . It saw subsequent editions, including a second printing in Lucknow, India, in Majallat al-Ba'th al-Islami (1411 AH), and a third printing in Karachi by Idarat al-Qur'an wa-l-Ulum al-Islamiyyah (1412 AH) .
A revised fourth edition was prepared and annotated by the Syrian scholar Abd al-Fattah Abu Ghudda, who read the text with the author in Karachi, incorporating authorial amendments and supplementary notes . This edition was completed in Riyadh in 1415 AH and published jointly in one volume (163 pages) by Maktab al-Matbu'at al-Islamiyyah in Aleppo and Dar al-Basha'ir al-Islamiyyah in Beirut in 1416 AH .
