Majmuat al-Rasail wal-Masail al-Najdiyya (al-Juz al-Thalith) (The Collection of Najdi Treatises and Responsa, Volume Three) is the third volume of the compendium of Najdi scholarly writings, comprising the theological epistles, letters, and responsa of the scholar Abd al-Latif ibn Abd al-Rahman Al al-Shaykh (1225–1293 AH / 1810–1876 CE; also recorded as dying in 1292 AH) .
Compilation and Contents
The material in this volume was assembled, organized, and arranged into chapters by Abd al-Latif's student, Sulayman ibn Sahman (1266–1349 AH / 1850–1930 CE), who titled the original collection Uyun al-Rasail wal-Ajwiba ala al-Masail (The Foremost Treatises and Answers to Inquiries) . The compiler of the broader series assigned the entirety of the third volume to this collection .
The volume contains seventy-six treatises and legal answers spanning 453 pages . Its subject matter centers on elucidating the theological creed of the early Muslim generations (al-Salaf al-Salih), substantiating the doctrine of divine oneness (tawhid), and vindicating the teachings and legacy of his grandfather, Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab, against contemporary accusations . Among the texts included in the volume is al-Ithaf fi al-Radd ala al-Sahhaf, a polemical refutation of Abd al-Latif ibn Abd al-Muhsin al-Sahhaf transcribed by Ibn Sahman in 1338 AH .
The volume is not exhaustive of Abd al-Latif's output; numerous other treatises and legal answers by him appear across the other parts of Majmuat al-Rasail wal-Masail al-Najdiyya, as well as in al-Hadiyya al-Saniyya and al-Durar al-Saniyya .
Publication History
The volume was first published in 1345 AH (c. 1926/1927 CE) at Matbaat al-Manar in Egypt by order and at the expense of King Abd al-Aziz Al Saud, who designated it as an Islamic endowment (waqf) . The edition was reviewed, corrected, and annotated with marginal commentary by Muhammad Rashid Rida . It forms the third part of the broader five-volume collection .
