Majmuat al-Rasail wa al-Masail (A Collection of Treatises and Legal Inquiries) is a multi-volume compilation of theological, legal, and interpretive writings by Ibn Taymiyya (d. 728 AH / 1328 CE), edited and annotated by Muhammad Rashid Rida .
Background and Editorial History
The collection was assembled and printed in Cairo at Matba'at al-Manar under the editorial supervision of Muhammad Rashid Rida in 1349 AH, with later editions published by Lajnat al-Turath al-Arabi . Rashid Rida corrected the texts, provided explanatory footnotes, and referenced their hadith citations .
A number of the manuscripts included in the collection reached Rashid Rida from Iraq, including treatises sent by Muhammad Bahjat al-Athari at the recommendation of Mahmud Shukri al-Alusi . Portions of these works were initially serialized in Rida's periodical al-Manar before being gathered into the printed collection .
Structure and Contents
The compilation is organized into five parts (often issued in two volumes) and contains treatises and legal rulings (fatawa) spanning several disciplines :
- Quranic exegesis (tafsir) and Hadith
- Creed and theology (aqa'id)
- Legal theory (usul) and applied rulings (ahkam)
- Ethics, conduct (adab), and Sufism (tasawwuf)
Among the prominent treatises published within the collection are:
- Ibtal Wahdat al-Wujud (The Invalidation of the Unity of Being), refuting monistic Sufi doctrines .
- Aqwam Ma Qila fi al-Mashi'a wa al-Hikma wa al-Qada wa al-Qadar (The Soundest Discourse on Divine Will, Wisdom, Decree, and Predestination) .
- Risala fi Ahl al-Suffa wa al-Abatil Fihim wa fi al-Awliya (Treatise on the People of the Bench, the Falsehoods Regarding Them, and the Saints) .
Scholarly Standing
Majmuat al-Rasail wa al-Masail served as one of the early primary print compilations of Ibn Taymiyya's shorter treatises and legal verdicts, frequently cited alongside earlier and subsequent collections such as Majmu'at Kurdistan, Abd al-Rahman ibn Qasim's Majmu' al-Fatawa, and Muhammad Rashad Salim's Jami' al-Rasail .
