Majmu Takhrij Shams al-Din al-Maqdisi (Majmūʿ Takhrīj Shams al-Dīn al-Maqdisī) is a collection of hadith transmissions and extractions (takhrīj) compiled by the Hanbali jurist and traditionist Shams al-Din Ahmad ibn Abd al-Wahid al-Maqdisi (564–623 AH / 1168–1226 CE), who was commonly known as al-Bukhari .
Author and Background
The compiler was Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Abd al-Wahid ibn Ahmad ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Sa'di al-Maqdisi al-Hanbali . Born in 564 AH, he belonged to the notable Banu al-Sa'di scholarly family of Damascus . He was the elder brother of the hadith master Diya al-Din al-Maqdisi and the father of the transmitter Fakhr al-Din Ibn al-Bukhari (Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Abd al-Wahid) . His maternal uncles included Muwaffaq al-Din Ibn Qudama and Abu Umar Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Qudama .
Al-Maqdisi undertook extensive travels in pursuit of knowledge across Iraq, Khurasan, and Transoxiana . He studied dialectics and comparative law (khilāf) under al-Radi al-Naysaburi and acquired the nickname "al-Bukhari" on account of his prolonged residence in Bukhara . He later settled in Homs, where the Ayyubid ruler al-Malik al-Mujahid Shirkuh assigned him a stipend to teach hadith and jurisprudence . He died in 623 AH .
Nature and Manuscript Preservation
The work represents a collection of hadith extractions (takhrīj) assembled by al-Maqdisi from his teachers and audition records during his scholarly travels and teaching assemblies . Portions of his hadith compilations and extractions were transmitted by his brother Diya' al-Din and other contemporaries, and manuscript copies of these parts—including Takhrij al-Bukhari and associated hadith treatises (ajzāʾ)—are preserved in the al-Zahiriyya collection in Damascus .
