Majmu fihi Musannafat Abi al-Abbas al-Asamm wa Ismail al-Saffar (Compendium of the Works of Abu al-Abbas al-Asamm and Ismail al-Saffar) is a modern edited collection of early hadith monographs (ajzāʾ) and narrations by two fourth-century AH traditionists: the Nishapur scholar Abu al-Abbas al-Asamm (d. 346 AH / 957 CE) and the Baghdad scholar Ismail al-Saffar (d. 341 AH / 952 CE) .
Overview and Structure
The work was edited by Nabil Sa'd al-Din Jarrar and published as the third entry in the series Majami' al-Ajza' al-Hadithiyyah (مجاميع الأجزاء الحديثية) . It unites surviving manuscript transmissions and small hadith treatises associated with both scholars in a single unified volume .
The compendium is divided into two primary sections:
- The Works of Abu al-Abbas al-Asamm: The section opens with a biographical study of Abu al-Abbas al-Asamm, followed by brief entries for his teachers appearing in the collection, an analysis of his writings and the manuscript witnesses used for collation, and the verified texts . Included in this division are his surviving hadith transmissions, such as the combined second and third parts (al-Thani wa-al-Thalith min Hadith Abi al-Abbas al-Asamm) transmitted through Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Tusi and Abu Zur'ah Tahir ibn Muhammad al-Maqdisi , as well as Juz' al-Asamm transmitted via Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Hayd al-Naysaburi , along with other transmissions .
- The Works of Ismail al-Saffar: Following the same organisational framework, the editor presents a biography of al-Saffar, biographical entries on his featured teachers, descriptions of the manuscript exemplars, and the verified treatises . It incorporates his preserved parts and transmissions, including al-Juz' al-Sadis min Hadith al-Saffar (selected benefits transmitted through Abu al-Husayn Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Bishran al-Mu'addal) .
Editorial Method and Publication
In establishing the text, the editor focused on accurate transcription against manuscript copies and rectifying scribal corruptions . For hadith documentation (takhrīj), priority was given to cross-referencing narrations directly to Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim whenever available, referencing other standard hadith compilations only when absent, without superfluous documentation . The entire volume is indexed using a single continuous numbering system applied across all narrations in both sections .
The book was released in its first edition by Dar al-Basha'ir al-Islamiyyah in Beirut in 1425 AH / 2004 CE .
