Majlisan min Amali Abi al-Husayn ibn Bishran (Two Dictation Sessions from the Dictations of Abu al-Husayn ibn Bishran) is a short hadith tract (juz') dictated by the Baghdadi traditionist Abu al-Husayn 'Ali ibn Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Bishran (328–415 AH / 939–1024 CE) in 412 AH / 1022 CE .
Dictation and Transmission
The work preserves two oral dictation assemblies (amali) held in Baghdad toward the end of Ibn Bishran's life. The first session was dictated on Friday, 17 Dhu al-Hijjah 412 AH . The second session was delivered after the Friday prayer in the Jami' al-Mahdi mosque on Friday, with six nights remaining in Dhu al-Hijjah 412 AH .
The text was transmitted directly from Ibn Bishran by Abu al-Khattab Nasr ibn Ahmad ibn 'Abd Allah ibn al-Batri, who read it before him in Safar 491 AH . It was subsequently received from Ibn al-Batri by Abu al-Fadl 'Abd Allah ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Qahir al-Tusi, the preacher at Mosul, in Rajab 566 AH .
Structure and Contents
The collection contains a total of twenty-three transmitted texts with their full chains of transmission (isnad):
- The First Session: Comprises eleven narrations (numbers 1–11) . It opens with the prophetic hadith of Thawban regarding the earth being folded up for the Prophet ﷺ and closes with a supplication narrated on the authority of Sufyan al-Thawri .
- The Second Session: Comprises twelve narrations (numbers 12–23) . It opens with a tradition from 'A'ishah mentioning Abu Bakr and al-Zubayr pursuing the Quraysh following the Battle of Uhud, and concludes with an exhortation related by Wahb ibn Munabbih regarding the qualities of the believer .
Ibn Bishran narrates these traditions from prominent tenth-century Baghdadi authorities, including Abu Ali Isma'il ibn Muhammad al-Saffar, Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn 'Amr ibn al-Bakhtari, Abu al-Hasan 'Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Misri, Abu 'Amr 'Uthman ibn Ahmad ibn al-Sammak, Da'laj ibn Ahmad, Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah al-Shafi'i, Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Salman al-Najjad, and Abu 'Umar Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Wahid al-Zahid .
Preservation and Publication
A manuscript copy of the tract is preserved within the al-Majami' al-'Umariyyah manuscript collection at the Zahiriyyah Library in Damascus . It was edited by Abu 'Abd Allah Hamzah al-Jaza'iri and published by al-Dar al-Athariyyah in Jordan (1st edition, 1430 AH / 2009 CE) as part of a collective volume titled Kitab Suluk Tariq al-Salaf wa-Sittat Ajza' Ukhra (The Path of the Early Generations and Six Other Tracts) .
