Majlis min Fawaid al-Layth ibn Sad (A Session from the Hadith Benefits of al-Layth ibn Sad) is a short hadith compilation containing narrations transmitted on the authority of the Egyptian jurist and traditionist al-Layth ibn Sad (d. 175 AH / 791 CE) .
Transmission and Structure
The work is organized as a single-session hadith booklet (juz' or majlis) preserving select traditions (fawaid) originating through chains linked to al-Layth . Transmission paths within the text run through primary students of al-Layth, including Yahya ibn Bukayr and 'Isa ibn Hammad (known as Zughba) . The subsequent line of narrators traces through later scholars, such as Abu al-Fath Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Abi al-Fawaris, who transmitted from Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Yusuf ibn Khallad al-Nusaybi, from Ahmad ibn Ibrahim ibn Milhan al-Mu'adhdhin, from Yahya ibn Bukayr . Another chain includes transmissions from Abu al-Khayr 'Abd al-Rahim al-Asfahani and Abu al-Fath Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Baqi ibn Salman .
Contents
The booklet comprises prophetic hadiths and related reports encompassing biographical, creedal, and legal subjects:
- The conversion of Thumama ibn Uthal: The account of Thumama ibn Uthal al-Hanafi, chief of al-Yamama, when he was captured, held in the Prophet's mosque, treated with forbearance, and subsequently accepted Islam before setting out for 'Umrah .
- Obedience and unity: The report of Abd Allah ibn Umar visiting Abd Allah ibn Muti during the Battle of al-Harra to convey the Prophetic statement on the obligation of adhering to the community : من نزع يدا من طاعة لقي الله عز وجل ليست له حجة، ومن مات مفارقا للجماعة مات ميتة جاهلية ("Whoever withdraws a hand from obedience will meet Allah without an excuse, and whoever dies separated from the main body dies a death of ignorance") .
- Hunting and pilgrimage rites: The narration of Abu Qatada hunting an onager while his companions were in a state of ritual consecration (ihram) .
- Eschatology and the Beatific Vision: An extensive tradition from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri concerning the believers seeing their Lord on the Day of Resurrection, the traversing of the Bridge (al-sirat), intercession (shafa'ah), and the deliverance of believers from the Fire .
- Sincere counsel and other traditions: The narration stating الدين النصيحة ("Religion is sincere advice") , along with an Israelite report concerning a weeping Exilarch (Ra's al-Jalut) reading the Torah .
