Majlis min Amali al-Najjad riwayat Ibn Makhlad

Majlis min Amali al-Najjad riwayat Ibn Makhlad (A Dictation Session from the Dictations of al-Najjad, Recension of Ibn Makhlad) is a short hadith compilation dictated by the Baghdadi jurist and hadith scholar Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Salman al-Najjad (d. 348 AH / 960 CE) and transmitted by Abu al-Hasan Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Ibrahim ibn Makhlad al-Bazzaz (d. 419 AH / 1028 CE) .

Composition and Transmission

The session was dictated by Abu Bakr al-Najjad on Friday, 4 Jumada al-Akhira 345 AH (956 CE) . The text was directly preserved through the transmission of Ibn Makhlad, from whom it was heard and transmitted by Abu Abd Allah al-Husayn ibn Ali ibn al-Busri al-Bundar .

Al-Najjad's dictation sessions circulated widely among later scholars through multiple recensions and selection compilations; Abu Tahir al-Silafi held transmissions of al-Najjad's dictations through Ibn Makhlad by way of both Ibn al-Busri and Ahmad ibn Ali al-Tarithithi . Other distinct sessions and selections from al-Najjad's dictations were transmitted by students such as Ahmad ibn Abd Allah ibn al-Husayn al-Mahamili and Uthman ibn Muhammad ibn Yusuf ibn Dust al-Allaf .

Content and Structure

The session consists of twenty-two narrated reports received by al-Najjad from teachers including Yahya ibn Ja'far, al-Hasan ibn Mukram, Isma'il ibn Ishaq, Ibrahim ibn Ishaq al-Harbi, Abd al-Malik ibn Muhammad, Mu'adh ibn al-Muthanna, and al-Hasan ibn Sallam . Most of the prophetic traditions in the session are transmitted via chains converging on Muhammad ibn Sirin from Abu Hurayrah .

The topics addressed across the session include:

  • The ninety-nine names of Allah: إن لله (عز وجل) تسعة وتسعين اسما مائة غير واحد من أحصاها كلها دخل الجنة ("Indeed, Allah has ninety-nine names, one hundred minus one; whoever enumerates them will enter Paradise") .
  • Etiquette regarding wedding invitations and hospitality while fasting .
  • Ritual purity, including the prohibition against urinating in standing water and then performing ritual bathing in it .
  • Marriage rulings, prohibiting proposing over a brother's proposal, a woman asking for her sister's divorce, and marrying a woman concurrently with her paternal or maternal aunt .
  • The interpretation and categories of dreams .
  • Prohibitions regarding beverage containers delivered to the delegation of Abd al-Qays .
  • An athar quoting Mu'awiyah ibn Qurrah on his son's filial piety .

At the conclusion of the session, the manuscript includes an appendix containing three additional hadiths (thalathat ahadith min hadithihi) transmitted through Abu Ghalib Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Baqillani from Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ghalib al-Barqani, concerning raising the hands in prayer, early attendance at the Friday prayer, and divine decree .

Manuscript Preservation

A surviving manuscript of this recension is preserved within the collection of al-Majami' al-'Umariyya at the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus (Majmu' 94, treatise 12, folios 126a–127b) .
