Majlis min Amali Abi Bakr al-Shirazi (A Dictation Session from the Amali of Abu Bakr al-Shirazi) is a short hadith tract containing a dictation session delivered by the traditionist Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Ali ibn Khalaf al-Shirazi (d. 487 AH / 1094 CE) in Nishapur.
Composition and Transmission
The session was dictated by Abu Bakr al-Shirazi—identified in biographical records as Ahmad ibn Ali ibn Abd Allah ibn Umar ibn Khalaf al-Shirazi, later al-Naysaburi, an adib and the foremost transmitter (musnid) of Nishapur in his time—on a Friday during the first ten days of Safar in 481 AH in Nishapur.
It was transmitted directly from him by the judge Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn al-Qasim ibn al-Muzaffar al-Shahrazuri (d. 538 AH). The chain of transmission continued through Abu Hafs Umar ibn Muhammad ibn Ma'mar ibn Tabarzadh, to whom it was read in 603 AH, and subsequently to Fakhr al-Din Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Abd al-Wahid al-Maqdisi (known as Ibn al-Bukhari), before whom it was recited on Monday, 5 Ramadan 689 AH, at his residence at the foot of Mount Qasiyun. It also carries transmissions through Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Ali al-Sayrafi al-Ansari and notes by Yusuf ibn Abd al-Hadi.
Contents
The preserved text contains hadiths transmitted by al-Shirazi with his full chains of narration back to the Prophet ﷺ, citing prominent teachers of Khurasan:
- A narration through al-Hakim al-Naysaburi from Abu Hurayra: مِنْ كَمَالِ الإِيمَانِ حُسْنُ الْخُلُقِ ("Part of the perfection of faith is good character"), along with a critical note by al-Hakim noting the solitary transmission of Abu Khalaf Abd Allah ibn Isa al-Khazzaz from Yunus ibn Ubayd.
- A narration through Abu Tahir Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Ziyadi from Abu Hatim Muhammad ibn Idris al-Razi from Anas ibn Malik regarding Abu Talha giving his garden in charity when the verse لَنْ تَنَالُوا الْبِرَّ حَتَّى تُنْفِقُوا مِمَّا تُحِبُّونَ ("You will never attain righteousness until you spend from that which you love") was revealed.
- A narration through the Quran commentator Abu al-Qasim al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn Habib from Abu Muslim al-Kajji from al-Nu'man ibn Bashir: الْحَلالُ بَيِّنٌ وَالْحَرَامُ بَيِّنٌ ("The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear...").
- A narration through Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami from Ishaq ibn Ibrahim al-Hanzali from Anas ibn Malik, where the manuscript fragment ends.
Manuscript Transmission
The text survives as part of a composite codex (juz') alongside a second session of hadiths by the preacher Abu Bakr Ismail ibn Ali al-Naysaburi (d. 482 AH), who resided in Rayy and served as the preacher of its ancient congregational mosque, both transmitted by al-Shahrazuri. This copy is preserved among the Umariyya collections at the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus (Majmu' 70, fols. 1–14). Another manuscript in the same library contains a larger collection of seven dictation sessions from al-Shirazi's Amali, transmitted by Abu Sa'd Abd al-Wahhab ibn al-Hasan (Majmu' 103, fols. 1–17).
