Majlis fi Hadith Jabir (full title: Majlis fi Hadith Jabir alladhi rahala fihi masirat shahr ila 'Abd Allah ibn Unays) is a hadith treatise by the Damascene scholar Ibn Nasir al-Din al-Dimashqi (d. 842 AH / 1438 CE), dedicated to the critical examination and transmission of a celebrated narration on travel in pursuit of prophetic traditions.

Content and Scholarly Method

The treatise focuses on the report regarding the Companion Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah, who undertook a one-month journey to hear a single hadith concerning retribution and the Day of Judgment directly from the Companion Abd Allah ibn Unays. Ibn Nasir al-Din documents and evaluates the various transmission paths (turuq) of the report. In his critical evaluation of individual chains, he identifies their defects and grades their transmitters; for instance, he identified the route recorded through 'Umar ibn Subh as the flimsiest of all paths for the narration, declaring 'Umar ibn Subh to be a liar and fabricator of hadith.

Transmission and Publication

A surviving manuscript copy of the treatise was penned by Ibn Nasir al-Din's student Najm al-Din Ibn Fahd al-Makki (d. 885 AH / 1480 CE), featuring the work's title inscribed in Ibn Nasir al-Din's own handwriting.

The text was published in Beirut in 1415 AH / 1995 CE. It was later edited by Mish'al ibn Bani al-Jibrin al-Mutayri and published by Dar Ibn Hazm in Beirut in 1422 AH / 2001 CE as part of a collective volume of treatises by Ibn Nasir al-Din.
