Majallat Majma al-Fiqh al-Islami (Journal of the Islamic Fiqh Academy) is a multi-volume scholarly journal issued by the International Islamic Fiqh Academy, an organ established under the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (formerly the Organisation of the Islamic Conference) and headquartered in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia . It serves as the official record of the academy's conferences, publishing the research treatises, deliberations, and formal juristic resolutions formulated by Muslim jurists and specialists to address modern developments through collective legal reasoning (ijtihad jamaʿi) .
Background and Establishment
The establishment of the academy emerged from a resolution adopted at the Third Islamic Summit Conference held in Mecca in 1401 AH (1981 CE), followed by its constituent conference in June 1982 CE under the auspices of King Fahd ibn Abd al-Aziz . The academy's statutes designated Jeddah as its headquarters and defined its mission as fostering Islamic unity, examining contemporary challenges, and offering Sharia-based solutions anchored in the Quran and the Sunnah .
The journal was launched to publish the scholarly outputs of the academy's sessions. Introductory addresses across its various issues were provided by the president of the academy council, Bakr Abu Zayd, the academy's secretary-general, Muhammad al-Habib Ibn al-Khojah, as well as successive secretaries-general of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference, including Syed Sharifuddin Pirzada, Hamid Algabid, Azzeddine Laraki, and Abdelouahed Belkeziz .
Scope and Methodology
The journal brings together commissioned research papers submitted by academy members and specialized scholars across various fields, including Islamic jurisprudence, economics, medicine, and sociology . Its contents focus on unprecedented contemporary issues (nawazil) requiring legal determination, such as:
- Contemporary financial transactions, including banking issues, inflation, currency fluctuations, credit cards, real estate financing, diminished partnership (al-musharakah al-mutanaqisah), and investment deposits .
- Biomedical ethics, including organ transplantation, medical codes of conduct, and legal rulings pertaining to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) .
- Modern contractual forms and communication methods, such as concluding contracts via modern communication equipment .
- Social and public affairs, including human rights in Islam, health insurance, the investment of endowments (awqaf), and zakat on shares and agricultural products .
Following the presentation and academic debate of these research papers during the academy's sessions, specialized drafting committees formulate the final resolutions and recommendations (al-qararat wa-l-tawsiyat), which are printed alongside the research papers in the journal .
