Majallat al-Buhuth al-Islamiyya

Majallat al-Buhuth al-Islamiyya (est. 1395 AH / 1975 CE) is a Saudi peer-reviewed periodical of Islamic scholarly studies published in Riyadh by the General Presidency of Scholarly Research and Ifta in conjunction with the General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Scholars .

Establishment and Management

The journal launched its inaugural issue in the months of Rajab–Shaʿban–Ramadan 1395 AH as a quarterly periodical issued every three months by the General Presidency of Scholarly Research, Ifta, Daʿwah, and Guidance in Riyadh . The initial supervisory committee comprised Shaykh إبراهيم بن محمد آل الشيخ, Shaykh محمد بن عودة, Shaykh عبد الله بن سليمان بن منيع, and Shaykh عثمان الصالح, the latter also serving as editor-in-chief .

In subsequent periods, the general supervision of the journal was assumed by the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, including Shaykh عبد العزيز بن عبد الله بن باز—whose regular opening editorials appeared continuously until his death, issue 57 being the first published without his opening—and later Shaykh عبد العزيز بن عبد الله بن محمد آل الشيخ . The editorship-in-chief later passed to Dr. محمد بن سعد الشويعر, alongside supervisory committee members such as Dr. عبد العزيز بن محمد العبد المنعم, Dr. عبد الله بن عبد الرحمن بن جبرين, Shaykh أحمد بن عبد الرزاق الدويش, and Shaykh عبد الله بن محمد الخنين . Although established as a quarterly publication, its frequency was temporarily adjusted in later years to appear once every four months .

Scope and Contents

Serving as the official scholarly organ of the presidency, the journal covers diverse areas of Islamic thought, including jurisprudence (fiqh) and legal theory (usul al-fiqh), creed (ʿaqida), and Quranic studies .

Each issue typically comprises several designated sections:

  • Editorials (al-iftitahiyya): Opening remarks contributed by the Grand Mufti on topical religious or communal matters .
  • Legal Rulings (al-fatawa): Selected responsa from prominent Saudi scholars, such as محمد بن إبراهيم آل الشيخ, ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Baz, and ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn ʿAbd Allah Al al-Shaykh, as well as formal rulings issued by the Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta .
  • Academic Research (al-buhuth): Peer-reviewed studies by academic researchers and religious scholars on legal doctrines, contemporary jurisprudential cases, and theological principles .
  • Official Declarations and Decisions: Communiqués, declarations, and resolutions from the Council of Senior Scholars (Hayʾat Kibar al-ʿUlamaʾ) and international Islamic jurisprudence academies .

The journal has also published comprehensive multi-issue subject indexes to facilitate reference to its historical research articles and contributors, such as the analytical index prepared by Amin Sulayman Saydu covering issues 16 through 30 (1406–1411 AH) . By issue 95, the journal maintained this multi-section structural format .
