Majallat al-Bayan

Majallat al-Bayan (The Clarification Magazine) is an Arabic monthly Islamic periodical established by al-Muntada al-Islami in Dhu al-Hijjah 1406 AH (August 1986 CE) . It covers Islamic legal studies, contemporary thought, educational theory, missionary work (da'wah), and socio-political analysis across the Muslim world .

History and Circulation

The magazine was launched by al-Muntada al-Islami in London in Dhu al-Hijjah 1406 AH (August 1986 CE) . Although it began with modest distribution and limited sales, its circulation expanded steadily over subsequent years . Early leadership included editor-in-chief Muhammad al-Abdah, who steered the publication toward an institutional editorial framework .

By its later operational phases, the magazine reached a monthly print run of 42,000 copies distributed in over 100 countries . Al-Muntada al-Islami allocated between 4,500 and 5,000 complimentary monthly subscriptions to Islamic centers, teachers, and students of knowledge who could not otherwise afford it . The magazine operated regional branch offices, including in Riyadh, alongside the broader network of fourteen field offices maintained by its parent organization .

Editorial Policy and Objectives

The editorial platform focuses on articulating the creed and methodology of Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah and grounding Islamic activism in textual evidence from the Quran and Sunnah according to the understanding of the early generations (al-salaf al-salih) . Its declared editorial objectives include:

  • Propagating textual Islamic jurisprudence (al-ilm al-shar'i) and educational studies to guide Islamic communal life .
  • Analyzing contemporary political, intellectual, and economic conditions facing Muslim societies and proposing solutions grounded in Islamic principles .
  • Calling for unity among Muslims while discouraging partisan factionalism (hizbiyyah), narrow regionalism, and personal vilification .
  • Countering ideological trends viewed as detrimental to Islamic heritage, including secularist currents and doctrinal innovations .

The editors maintained a policy directed at serious intellectual discourse rather than entertainment, deliberately avoiding reliance on illustrations and superficial features in favor of in-depth articles and analytical essays .

Affiliated Projects and Activities

Al-Muntada al-Islami established several parallel publishing ventures linked with the periodical:

  • Kitab al-Muntada (also known in connection with the magazine as Kitab al-Bayan): A book series addressing religious, social, and political subjects from an Islamic perspective, producing over 34 titles with multiple reprints .
  • Sister periodicals: The English-language bulletin al-Manar in Britain, the English-language magazine al-Jumu'ah published in the United States, and the bilingual English–Swahili journal al-Nasiha in Kenya .
  • Indices and Competitions: Following its first decade, the magazine released a comprehensive classified index, al-Fihris al-Mawdu'i li-Majallat al-Bayan (1–120), comprising over 400 pages across more than 140 subject categories . It also sponsored regular research competitions on Islamic education and contemporary topics .
  • Cultural Forums: The periodical hosted public symposia, including its first cultural forum (al-Multaqa al-Thaqafi al-Awwal) in Khartoum in Rajab 1423 AH, addressing contemporary challenges under the theme "Muslims and Transformations... Where to?" .
