Majalis al-Tadhkir min Hadith al-Bashir al-Nadhir (Sessions of Reminder from the Hadith of the Bringer of Glad Tidings and Warner) is a collection of hadith commentaries and writings on the Prophetic Sunnah by the Algerian scholar and reformer Abd al-Hamid ibn Badis (d. 1359 AH / 1940 CE) .
Background and Origin
The material comprising the book was originally authored by Ibn Badis as regular opening articles and essays in his monthly journal al-Shihab, beginning in Ramadan 1347 AH (February 1929 CE), under headings including Majalis al-Tadhkir min Kalam al-Hakim al-Khabir wa-Hadith al-Bashir al-Nadhir . Alongside his live teaching circles at the Green Mosque in Constantine, these written commentaries served as an integral component of the reformist educational program spearheaded by the Association of Algerian Muslim Scholars . The compiled collection gathers these serialized hadith expositions along with Ibn Badis's prose and poetic writings related to the Sunnah and the Prophet ﷺ from al-Shihab and other periodicals issued by the Association, such as al-Sunnah and al-Basa'ir .
Structure and Contents
The work is organized into five main sections :
- Section One (Majalis al-Tadhkir min Hadith al-Bashir al-Nadhir): Contains the hadiths commented upon by Ibn Badis in al-Shihab under this title .
- Section Two (Ahadith fi Aghrad Mukhtalifah): Comprises topical essays and treatments revolving around various Prophetic hadiths published across al-Shihab and related journals .
- Section Three (Mawdu'at Muttasilah bi-l-Sunnah): Collects general essays and discussions concerning the authority, role, and understanding of the Sunnah drawn from the periodicals of the Association of Algerian Muslim Scholars .
- Section Four (Mawdu'at Muttasilah bi-Sahib al-Sunnah): Gathers articles, public addresses, and poetic pieces composed by Ibn Badis on the occasion of the Prophet's Birthday (al-Mawlid al-Nabawi) .
- Section Five (Appendices / al-Mulhaqat): Includes texts related to Ibn Badis's concluding lesson on Imam Malik's al-Muwatta', the celebration marking that completion, and a treatise entitled al-Muslihun wa-l-Sunnah ("Reformers and the Sunnah") .
Method of Commentary
In analyzing individual hadiths, Ibn Badis follows a consistent, structured method divided into six progressive stages :
- Introduction (Tamhid): Prepares the reader by framing the overarching topic addressed by the tradition .
- Chain of Transmission (al-Sanad): Identifies the narrators, textual sources, and the hadith's scholarly authentication and practical weight .
- Text (al-Matn): Examines the specific phrasing and evaluates variant transmitted wordings .
- Vocabulary and Syntax (al-Alfaz wa-l-Tarakib): Clarifies obscure vocabulary and highlights grammatical and rhetorical structures to aid comprehension .
- General Meaning (al-Ma'na): Synthesizes the core message of the narration concisely while addressing differing interpretive possibilities .
- Deductions (Istinbatat): Derives ethical, psychological, social, legal, historical, and cosmic principles from the text, explicitly applying them to contemporary Algerian society, the broader Muslim community, and general human affairs .
Publication History
The hadith commentaries of Ibn Badis were included by Ammar Talibi in the first volume of his compiled edition Athar Ibn Badis, published in 1388 AH (1968 CE) . The standalone edition under the title Majalis al-Tadhkir min Hadith al-Bashir al-Nadhir was issued by the Algerian Ministry of Religious Affairs in 1403 AH (1983 CE), printed by Dar al-Ba'th, on the forty-third anniversary of Ibn Badis's death, featuring an introduction by the Minister of Religious Affairs, Abd al-Rahman Shayban .
