Maghani al-Akhyar fi Sharh Asami Rijal Maani al-Athar (Dwellings of the Chosen in Explaining the Names of the Transmitters of Maani al-Athar) is a biographical dictionary by the Hanafi scholar Badr al-Din al-Ayni (762–855 AH / 1361–1451 CE) dedicated to evaluating the transmitters (rijal) appearing in Abu Ja'far al-Tahawi's hadith compilation Sharh Maani al-Athar .

Purpose and Relationship to Other Works

Al-Ayni authored the work as a specialized reference on the chain transmitters of Sharh Maani al-Athar, distinguishing reliable narrators from weak ones . In the introduction, he praised al-Tahawi's collection as an expansive resource for both jurisprudence and hadith .

The work originally served as an accompaniment and prelude to al-Ayni's commentary Mabani al-Akhbar fi Sharh Maani al-Athar, in which he deliberately omitted full biographical notices of the isnad narrators because he had already treated them separately in Maghani al-Akhyar . Later, in his revised and expanded commentary Nukhab al-Afkar fi Tanqih Mabani al-Akhbar, al-Ayni incorporated extensive biographical entries for every transmitter directly into the body of the commentary .

Reception and Manuscripts

Al-Sakhawi recorded that Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani benefited from al-Ayni's scholarship, particularly during al-Ayni's composition of this biographical work on al-Tahawi's transmitters . Khayr al-Din al-Zirikli cataloged the work as a two-volume manuscript in the field of hadith terminology and transmitter criticism . It has also been edited and published by Muhammad Hasan Ismail .
