Mafatih al-Aghani fi al-Qiraat wa al-Maani (Keys of Melodies on Recitations and Meanings) is a treatise on the variant readings of the Quran and their semantic and linguistic justification (tawjih al-qiraat), composed by Abu al-Ala Muhammad ibn Abi al-Mahasin al-Kirmani (d. after 564 AH / 1169 CE) .

Author and Composition

The work was authored by the Hanafi jurist and Quran reciter Abu al-Ala Muhammad ibn Abi al-Mahasin ibn Abi al-Fath ibn Abi Shuja al-Kirmani (also identified in bio-bibliographical sources as Muhammad ibn Abi al-Mafakhir ibn Abd al-Rashid, Rukn al-Din Abu al-Futuh) . The author completed writing the autograph manuscript of the text in the late morning of 15 Jumada al-Ula 563 AH (March 1168 CE) in the city of Kirman .

In his introduction, al-Kirmani states that he composed the book to clarify the meanings of the variant recitations transmitted from the seven canonical Quranic readers, organizing and refining their linguistic proofs and interpretations so as to facilitate the retention, vocalization, and understanding of their subtleties . In the introduction, he refers to the title as al-Mafatih al-Aghani murattaban ala al-qiraah wa-al-maani .

Structure and Method

The work is organized sequentially following the traditional order of the Quranic surahs, functioning as a concise manual :

  • Seeking Refuge (al-Istiadha): Al-Kirmani opens the book with an examination of the formulas of seeking refuge chosen by the seven readers (Nafi, Ibn Kathir, Abu Amr ibn al-Ala, Ibn Amir, Asim, Hamza, and al-Kisai), citing their textual evidence from the Quran and their underlying linguistic justifications .
  • Surah-by-Surah Exposition: The author examines selected verses beginning with Surat al-Fatiha and continuing through the final chapters of the Quran . For each passage treated, he records the variant readings transmitted from individual readers or regional traditions (such as the Hijazi or Kufan schools), while occasionally noting non-canonical or other recitations, such as those of Yaqub al-Hadrami or Abu Haywah al-Shami .

In his analysis, al-Kirmani combines grammatical parsing (irab), morphology, lexicography, and dialectal variations to explain how shifts in vowel patterns, consonant alterations, or additions and omissions alter or reinforce the meaning of the Quranic text .

Manuscript Transmission and Editions

The Ottoman bibliographer Hajji Khalifa recorded the work in Kashf al-Zunun, characterizing it as an abridgment arranged in the order of the surahs completed in Jumada al-Ula 563 AH .

An autograph manuscript copied by al-Kirmani in 563 AH is preserved in the Köprülü Library in Istanbul (MS 1631/4, fols. 39–111) . The text was edited by Abd al-Karim Mustafa Mudlij and published in a single volume by Dar Ibn Hazm in Beirut in 1422 AH / 2001 CE .
