Mabahith fi Ilm al-Qiraat ma Bayan Usul Riwayat Hafs (Studies in the Science of Quranic Readings with an Exposition of the Principles of the Transmission of Hafs) is a treatise on Quranic readings by Abu Mu'adh Muhammad Abbas al-Baz. The work introduces the discipline of Qira'at (Quranic readings), details the foundational rules (usul) governing the transmission of Hafs from Asim, and compiles the specific lexical variants in which Hafs diverged from other canonical readers.

Background and Purpose

The author finished writing the work on Thursday morning, 1 Rajab 1421 AH (2000 CE), in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Al-Baz, who held an authorization (ijazah) in the seven readings, noted that his primary motivation was the worldwide prevalence of the transmission of Hafs from Asim, which had become the sole transmission known to most Muslims and many students of knowledge. He sought to explain that this widespread reading differs in numerous words from the other canonical readings and even diverges from its counterpart, the transmission of Shu'bah, despite both originating from the same master, Asim al-Kufi. Al-Baz also emphasized that studying Hafs serves as an accessible entry point to the broader field, as its rules encompass features found across other reading traditions.

Content and Structure

The book addresses general theoretical principles as well as verse-by-verse recitational variants:

  • General Principles (Usul): The text outlines the foundational rules applied in the transmission of Hafs, demonstrating how it incorporates principles shared with other readers—such as observing general manifest pronunciation (izhar) while making specific exceptions for assimilation (idgham) in phrases like يا بُنَيَّ ارْكَبْ مَعَنا (Hud: 42) and يَلْهَثْ ذلِكَ (al-A'raf: 176). It also treats specific rules concerning the shortening of the detached prolongation (qasr al-munfasil) for Hafs, drawing on contemporary references such as Atiyyah Qabil Nasr's Ghayat al-Murid fi Ilm al-Tajwid.
  • Unique Variants (al-Mufradat): A central component of the book is a dedicated section titled al-Mishkat fi Bayan ma Infarda bihi Hafs 'an Ghayrihi min al-Qurra' wa-l-Ruwat (The Niche in Clarifying the Solitary Variants of Hafs over Other Readers and Transmitters). This section organizes the data in a tabular format detailing the verse number, Surah, Hafs's specific pronunciation, and an explanatory commentary contrasting his reading with those of other canonical authorities among the Ten Readers.

Reception

The work received commendations (taqriz) from Quranic scholars:

  • Muhammad Abd al-Hamid Abd Allah Khalil, the head of Quranic recitation centers in Alexandria (Shaykh Maqari' al-Iskandariyya), under whom al-Baz had studied recitations, audited the text, made corrections and additions, and commended it for introducing new benefits into the field.
  • Muhammad ibn Iwad ibn Zayid al-Harbawi commended the author for comprehensively encompassing the solitary variants transmitted by Hafs from Asim across the ten canonical readings.
