Maalim Tarbawiya li-Talibi Asna al-Wilayat al-Shariyya

Maalim Tarbawiya li-Talibi Asna al-Wilayat al-Shariyya (Educational Landmarks for Seekers of the Most Sublime Sharia Guardianships) is a treatise on student etiquette, pedagogy, and religious mentorship by Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Mukhtar al-Shanqiti, assistant professor at the Islamic University of Madinah and teacher at the Prophet's Mosque.

Background and Compilation

The work was originally delivered across various years and settings as recorded lectures and directives on the virtues and etiquettes of seeking Islamic knowledge. In 1414 AH, a student of knowledge proposed collecting and transcribing these scattered teachings, transcribing eight specialized lectures dedicated to the subject. After organizing and synthesizing the material, the compiler presented the complete draft to al-Shanqiti, who approved of its contents. The book is dedicated to seekers of knowledge, drawing upon al-Shanqiti's lecture titled Wasaya li-Talibi al-Ilm (Counsels for Seekers of Knowledge).

Structure and Contents

The book begins with an introduction addressing the nobility of religious knowledge and the standing of scholars, followed by five thematic chapters and a conclusion:

  • Chapter 1: Etiquettes toward Scholars (Maalim fi al-Adab maa al-Ulama): Divided into two parts, covering conduct toward deceased scholars (remembering them favorably, honoring them, reciprocating their benefits, and offering excuses for their mistakes) and living scholars (early attendance at gatherings, sitting close with reverence, attentive listening, polite discourse, preparing lessons in advance, and humility before the truth).
  • Chapter 2: Personal Etiquettes of the Student (Maalim fi Adab Talib al-Ilm fi Nafsihi): Outlines eleven core landmarks, including God-consciousness (taqwa), sincere intention (ikhlas), full dedication to study, patience under hardship, safeguarding time, selecting righteous companions, good character, taking knowledge only from qualified authorities, adhering to the Quran and the Sunnah, and putting knowledge into practice.
  • Chapter 3: Etiquettes of Study and Lessons (Maalim fi Adab Talib al-Ilm fi Darsihi): Details four practical principles, consisting of studying disciplines sequentially one by one, mastering core material, avoiding premature entry into public teaching or disputation, and engaging in collaborative revision (mudhakara).
  • Chapter 4: Principles of Issuing Legal Rulings (Maalim fi Bad Ahkam al-Fatwa): Sets out seven guidelines for legal consultation, including sincerity, deep insight, scrupulousness (wara), weighing benefits and harms resulting from a ruling, nurturing the fear of God, carefully deliberating over questions to comprehend them fully, and assessing the condition of the questioner.
  • Chapter 5: Answers to Pressing Inquiries (Ijabāt Muhimma an Asila Mulimma): Contains fourteen detailed questions and answers addressing practical dilemmas and common obstacles encountered during religious studies.
