Ma'alim al-Sunan (Signs of the Sunan) is a commentary on Sunan Abi Dawud authored by the hadith scholar and jurist Abu Sulayman al-Khattabi (d. 388 AH / 998 CE; another report gives 380 AH) . It is recognized as the earliest commentary written on Abu Dawud's hadith collection, composed roughly eighty years after the original work .
Composition and Transmission
Al-Khattabi stated in his opening preface that he authored the book at the request of some of his colleagues . In compiling his works, he taught in Nishapur . For the text of Sunan Abi Dawud, al-Khattabi relied upon the transmission (riwayah) of Abu Dawud's student Abu Bakr ibn Dasah .
In the introduction to Ma'alim al-Sunan, al-Khattabi highly praised Abu Dawud's Sunan, describing it as an unsurpassed religious work that received widespread acceptance across regions such as Iraq, Egypt, and the Maghreb, while noting that scholars in Khurasan had dedicated themselves more to the works of al-Bukhari and Muslim . He highlighted that Abu Dawud had uniquely succeeded in gathering, organizing, and abridging legal hadiths (ahadith al-ahkam) .
Method and Scope
Al-Khattabi did not comment on every hadith in the Sunan. Instead, he selected specific narrations from each chapter, often introducing his remarks with "from the chapter of so-and-so" (min bab kadha) . If multiple narrations shared the same primary legal meaning, he commented on just one to serve as the explanation for the entire section .
The work is primarily a legal (fiqhi) rather than an isnad-focused commentary :
- Linguistic clarification: Al-Khattabi provided extensive explanations of obscure vocabulary (gharib), frequently supporting his linguistic analyses with Arabic poetry and classical idioms .
- Jurisprudential discussion: He detailed the legal derivations of the hadiths, presented divergent scholarly rulings, and stated his preferred views .
- Reconciliation: He harmonized texts that appeared ostensibly contradictory .
- Isnad criticism: He rarely analyzed biographical details of narrators (rijal) or quoted earlier hadith masters on grading, though he occasionally passed judgment on hadiths himself .
Reception and Influence
Ma'alim al-Sunan is widely regarded as a foundational reference for subsequent commentators on Sunan Abi Dawud . Al-Hafiz Abu Tahir al-Silafi praised the book, remarking that he had not seen a better commentary on Abu Dawud's compilation . Subsequent hadith scholars—including al-Mundhiri, Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya, and Shams al-Haqq al-Azim Abadi—relied heavily on al-Khattabi's observations in their respective works and commentaries .
Shihab al-Din Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Maqdisi (d. 765 AH) abridged the work under the title 'Ujalat al-'Alim min Kitab al-Ma'alim .
Print Editions
The work was edited and published in Aleppo by Muhammad Raghib al-Tabbakh al-Halabi at al-Matba'a al-'Ilmiyya (1351 AH / 1920–1924 and 1932–1934), accompanied by an introduction covering the biographies of Abu Dawud and al-Khattabi along with a description of the manuscripts used . It was also published in Cairo (1369 AH / 1950 CE) in the margins of al-Mundhiri's Mukhtasar Sunan Abi Dawud, printed alongside Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya's Tahdhib al-Sunan, edited by Ahmad Muhammad Shakir and Muhammad Hamid al-Fiqi .
