Ma Rawahu al-Akabir an al-Asaghir (What Seniors Narrated from Juniors) is a specialized hadith tract (juz') compiled by the hadith master Abu Bakr al-Baghandi (d. 312 AH / 924–925 CE) gathering solitary transmissions in which senior scholars narrated from their juniors .

Subject Matter and Scope

The work belongs to the genre of hadith sciences known as riwayat al-akabir 'an al-asaghir, which examines instances where a narrator relates traditions from someone who is younger in age, lower in generational tier (tabaqah), or less prominent in memorization and rank . Al-Baghandi focused the collection on solitary transmissions (afrad) that illustrate this phenomenon across various chains of transmission, featuring narrations transmitted between prominent Successors and their peers or students .

Transmission and Publication

The surviving text represents the first part (al-juz' al-awwal) of the work, transmitted from al-Baghandi through his student Abu al-Husayn Muhammad ibn al-Muzaffar (d. 379 AH) . It then passed down through a chain of transmitters that included Abu al-Faraj Abd al-Wahhab ibn Burhan al-Ghazzal and the jurist Abu al-Fath Nasr ibn Ibrahim al-Maqdisi .

The text was edited by Khalid ibn Muhammad ibn Sa'id Basamah and published in a single volume by Dar al-Tawhid in Riyadh (1428 AH / 2007 CE) under the title al-Juz' al-Awwal mimma Rawahu al-Akabir 'an al-Asaghir min al-Muhaddithin min al-Afrad .
