Ma Qaruba Sanaduhu min Hadith Abi al-Qasim al-Samarqandi (lit. 'What Possesses an Elevated Isnad from the Hadith of Abu al-Qasim al-Samarqandi') is a hadith tract (juz') compiled by the Damascene-born Baghdadi scholar and hadith master Abu al-Qasim al-Samarqandi (d. 536 AH / 1141 CE) . The work gathers narrations that feature short, elevated transmission chains ('uluww al-isnad) leading back to the Prophet ﷺ .
Scope and Content
The text is composed of narrations characterized primarily by five-tier (khumasiyyat) and six-tier (sudasiyyat) chains of transmission . In these reports, al-Samarqandi transmits through his prominent teachers—including Abu al-Husayn Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Naqqur, 'Abd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Sarifini, Abu al-Qasim 'Ali ibn Ahmad ibn al-Busri, and Abu Nasr Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Zaynabi—who in turn narrate through earlier authorities such as Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi, Abu Tahir al-Mukhallis, and 'Ubayd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Hubaba .
The collected traditions trace back to Companions such as Anas ibn Malik and Abu Umama al-Bahili . They cover various subjects, including moral virtues, fasting, and funeral prayers; among them is the report: الصَّوْمُ جنةٌ ("Fasting is a shield") .
Transmission and Reception
The tract was transmitted through direct audition from al-Samarqandi. Records note readings before him in Baghdad during Dhu al-Hijja 528 AH and in 529 AH, as well as an audition in 534 AH . Among its principal transmitters from the author was the hadith scholar Abu Muhammad 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn al-Akhdar, along with Abu Ahmad ibn Sukayna . Subsequent scholars transmitted the tract across generations through chains involving figures such as Ibn al-Bukhari, Abu al-Tahir Barakat ibn Ibrahim al-Khashshu'i, and al-Najib al-Harrani .
Manuscripts and Publication
Manuscript copies of the work are preserved in composite collections (majami') at the al-Zahiriyya Library in Damascus . The text was edited by 'Ata' Allah ibn 'Abd al-Ghaffar ibn Fayd al-Sindi and published in a single volume by Maktabat al-Sunna in Cairo in 1414 AH (1994 CE) .
